We are seeking an experienced CNC Setup Operator to join our precision machining team. The ideal candidate is a self-sufficient machinist who can take a part from a drawing all the way through to a completed, inspected component with minimal supervision. This role is centered on strong hands-on machine setup and fixturing skills across 3, 4, and 5-axis mills running Haas, Fanuc, and Siemens controls, within an AS9100-certified quality system handling controlled/export-restricted goods.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform machine setup independently on 3, 4, and 5-axis mills running Haas, Fanuc, and Siemens controls
- Design, select, and build workholding and fixturing solutions to support efficient, repeatable production
- Load, indicate, and align parts, fixtures, and vises to hold required tolerances
- Set tool offsets, work offsets, and verify program zero prior to running production
- Read and edit G-code at the machine control as needed to make in-process adjustments (offsets, feeds/speeds, tool changes, minor toolpath edits)
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and 3D models to plan a complete setup and machining strategy from raw stock to finished part
- Run first-article and production parts, making in-process adjustments to hold tolerance and finish requirements
- Select appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds based on material and part geometry
- Perform in-process and final inspection to verify parts meet print specifications
- Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with AS9100 quality procedures, including setup sheets, process sheets, and revision control
- Follow all controlled goods / export control (ITAR/EAR) requirements, including proper handling, storage, and access restrictions for regulated materials, drawings, and data
- Troubleshoot setup, fixturing, and in-cycle issues, and make corrections to keep production running
- Collaborate with programmers, engineering, and quality to resolve setup or manufacturability issues
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop safety standards
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proven experience with setup on 3, 4, and 5-axis CNC mills
- Strong working knowledge of fixturing and workholding
- Solid understanding of G-code, with ability to read and make manual edits at the control
- Hands-on experience running Haas, Fanuc, and/or Siemens controls (experience across all three preferred)
- Ability to work independently — operators are expected to be fully proficient in setup and capable of running a part from drawing to completion without external assistance
- Familiarity with AS9100 documentation and quality procedures
- Understanding of controlled goods / export control restrictions and ability to comply with associated handling and confidentiality requirements
- Strong blueprint reading skills, including GD&T interpretation
- Ability to select proper tooling, speeds, and feeds for various materials (aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, exotic alloys, etc.)
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM familiarity a plus)
Preferred Qualifications (Bonus)
- Experience programming using modern CAM software (SolidCAM a strong plus; Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar also valued)
- Exposure to 5-axis simultaneous programming
- Experience in aerospace, defense, or other tightly regulated manufacturing environments
- Familiarity with probing systems and in-machine inspection
- Eligibility to work with controlled/export-restricted goods (may require candidates to meet specific citizenship/residency criteria per government regulations)
Education & Experience
- Minimum 3–5+ years of CNC setup/operating experience (multi-axis experience required)
- Technical diploma/certificate in CNC Machining, Tool & Die, or related field preferred, or equivalent hands-on experience
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
- Comfortable working in a shop-floor environment
