The Electrical Maintenance Technician Position is to assist in maintaining and improving the reliability of Penn properties located in Southern Ontario. Each property consists of a solar power-generating facility (a Solar Farm), surrounding land and maintenance equipment. Penn actively maintains all generating facilities, vegetation equipment, vehicles, and land within the property boundary.
Primary duties of the Electrical Maintenance Technician
Performing proactive routine maintenance on electrical equipment in the field, such as:
- Visual inspections of PV array, racking, and foundation
- Cleaning and maintaining E-House and I-Houses on site
- Voltage and current checks on PV equipment
- Cleaning and exercising breakers and related repairs
- Conduct torque tests on electrical connections
Performing reactive maintenance, such as:
- Changing of damaged modules (panels) from racking
- Finding ground faults with the use of an insulation resistance tester
- Replacing faulty connectors and wires
- Power cycling various communications equipment
- Adjusting and replacing 24V power supply buffer modules
- Diagnosing and replacing faulty PV Inverter components
Troubleshooting failures and finding root cause analysis and proactively working on bettering the reliability of the plants year-round.
Seconday duties of the Electrical Maintenance Technician
Secondary duties include snow removal, maintaining vegetation control equipment, trailers, and vehicles to perform in a safe manner. In addition, for the lands it involves, notably, the ability to provide vegetation control and drainage maintenance using commercial cutting and maintenance equipment.
The Electrical Maintenance Technician will work with the Penn Team in evaluating site specific situations that may require improvements and working toward a common solution and carrying out the work. It will involve studying various equipment performances, weather related concerns of the sites, and civil behaviors of the sites. The Electrical Maintenance Technician will report to the Director of Engineering. They will be expected to work in a close team environment with all the regular staff and contract personnel that Penn uses.
Locations
The position shall be based at the Solar Farm at Hamilton (near Cobourg); however, work will be performed at all 7 solar farm properties in Ontario. It is expected that this position will have varied start and end times due to production-related maintenance and failures.

The following is required of the Electrical Maintenance Technician position:
- Work consistently (all-weather environments) and independently (willing and comfortable working alone, in a team setting, and in tandem).
- Work in a safe manner. Health and Safety to be conducted by following task and equipment specific procedures and attending training for the position.
- Maintain friendly and cooperative “good neighbour” relations with neighbouring landowners, municipality representatives, and the community as a whole.
- Attend training to improve skills, knowledge, and to better your personal experience for the position.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Valid Ontario ‘G’ driver’s license.
The following is a list of preferred abilities and experience:
- Ability to use test equipment, such as; a multimeter, insulation resistance tester, ductor and IR cameras. Ability to translate the results into clear and concise reports for external parties.
- Experience in troubleshooting equipment issues with the use of SCADA systems and facility alarms.
- The ability to perform voltage, current, and insulation resistance tests on equipment to determine failure points.
- Mechanical skills and experience: power tools, hand-held equipment, test equipment, etc.
- Ability to operate heavy machinery such as tractors, skid steers, and excavators to perform vegetation and snow removal procedures.
- Experience in maintaining vegetation control equipment (Zero Turn and Billy Goat mowers, straight shaft weed trimmers, etc.).
- Strong computer skills specializing in Outlook, all other Microsoft Office products, and AutoCAD.
- Training including: Working at Heights, Standard First Aid CPR-C & AED, Utility Work Protection Code, WHMIS, etc.
- Ontario AR Driver’s License
- 309A Ontario Electrical License
