The Village of Baddeck is seeking a professional, organized and experienced individual to fill the role of a Public Works Operator for our Water and Wastewater plants. The PW Operator will support current Village public Works staff and take over existing responsibilities and upcoming initiatives. The Village of Baddeck is offering a permanent part time to full time position (approx. 25 to 40 hours/week) starting mid September.
Reporting to the Village Manager and working collaboratively with the Public Works staff, the Public Works Operator is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Public Works infrastructure as well as the daily operation of the Village wastewater treatment system and water system, ensuring the distribution of safe drinking water to the residents of the Village of Baddeck.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Acts as assistant to the Operator in Overall Direct Responsible Charge (ODRC).
- Performs and is responsible for daily checks on functionality of pumps, plant flows, motors and related equipment in connection with wells, water pumping and wastewater pumping.
- Scheduled water testing, monitoring and maintenance of chemical input and chemical feed equipment, instrument calibration, water lab testing equipment and SCADA system ensuring compliance with the Nova Scotia Department of Environment.
- Oversees and is responsible for regular repairs and corrective maintenance of the water/wastewater treatment system to avoid service interruptions.
- Performs quarterly meter readings and serves as a technical advisor in excessive water use situations.
- Responsible for water meter installations, replacements and repairs.
- Responsible for organizing water leak and sewer leak repairs
- Being on – call (scheduled) in case of water/sewer emergencies
- Periodic inspection, repairs and flushing of hydrants and ensure their accessibility and flag marking for winter conditions.
- Ensure proper procedures are followed when handling equipment, inventory, and assets. This includes maintaining the purchase, maintenance, security, and safe use of equipment, inventory, and assets.
General
- Reviewing and updating SOPs and manuals for plant operations
- Interact with contracted businesses and engineers on capital projects
- Works with contracted businesses to ensure the operation of the water and wastewater plant
- Works with the Village Manager to develop an operational budget for the Public Works department including providing supporting data for projects and capital expenditures.
- Assist in preparing annual water and wastewater reports for review by the Department of Environment
- Work independent and in a small team
- Advise the Village Commission monthly with a written report of all Public Works activities.
- Keep inventory records of all equipment, vehicles, hand tools and supplies in coordination with the Administrative Assistant.
- Maintains a clean and clutter free work area
- Ensures safety standards are met by Public Works Staff
- General maintenance to Public Works equipment, mowers, whipper snippers, blowers etc.
- Empty and maintain community waste receptacles as necessary.
- Mowing, trimming, and clearing brush/leaves etc. in community spaces.
Weekly Hours and Work Environment:
- This role operates 25-40 hours per week. Normal hours will be 7:30AM to 4:00PM. Each daily shift includes ½ hour lunch break (unpaid) and two 15- minute breaks.
- Physical ability to lift is mandatory. Agility, coordination, and mechanical ability would be helpful. You must be able to take direction and be able to follow instruction.
- Work takes place indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
- This role will involve daily physical labor including but not limited to standing and moving for significant amounts of time (e.g. standing, walking, moving for 1 to 2 hours at a time with short sitting breaks), use of tools including power tools, motorized equipment, walking, carrying equipment and supplies
Qualifications and Experience
- Experience in working in a wastewater and/or water treatment facility is an asset
- Education or experience in working with pumps, piping, plumbing, is an asset
- Certification as Operator in Training, Water Distribution Level 1 or Wastewater treatment Level 1 or 2 are an asset
- College diploma or certificate in Industrial Mechanical, Pipe Fitting, Plumbing, Carpentry or other trades would be an asset but not required. Minimum education required is completion of high school or equivalent.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License

Pay: $21.00-$24.00 per hour
