As a Litigation Paralegal (Collections), you will report to the supervising Partner and act as part of the Litigation Department team. If you have experience in a law firm environment, have a strong work ethic, are self-motivated and eager to learn, we want to hear from you.
Under the general supervision of the department head and the specific direction of assigning lawyers within the department, you will perform the following duties:
Collections, Civil Litigation, and Condominium Collections matters: conduct searches, draft, file, and serve demand letters and pleadings including statements of claim, judgments, garnishments, writs of sale and seizure, and notices of examination documents, and negotiate terms of settlement. In relation to the general litigation duties, conduct non-complex litigation assignments with respect to clients in areas including general civil litigation, insurance litigation, and document management. You will assist the litigator in the preparation and conduct of more complex litigation cases before various levels of court and assist in the performance of administrative and other duties as required.

Key Responsibilities:
- Accepting incoming calls and instructions from lawyers, clients, outside law firms, and staff; assisting them with collections queries and requests.
- Conducting asset and credit searches of individuals and corporate entities.
- Drafting, filing, and attending to service of demand letters, small claims, and statements of claim respecting collection of debt matters.
- Instructing students / coordinating appropriate counsel to attend to motions for sub-service, garnishment enforcement, and defended claims.
- Preparing certificate of judgment, entering, and registration of same as against real
- property.
- Calculation of payout statements, interest, and costs.
- Preparing, filing, and attending to service of documents in aid of execution including garnishment, writs of sale and seizure, and notice of examination.
- Under the general supervision of assigning lawyer or client negotiation of terms of settlement with the defendant or defendant’s counsel.
- Maintain and manage a successful diary/bring forward system for collection files.
- Reporting to client.
Skills and Qualifications:
- 6 years' experience as a Litigation Legal Assistant or Paralegal (asset)
- Knowledge of King’s Bench Rules and forms is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Excellent command of grammar, spelling, and vocabulary with familiarity with legal terminology.
- Ability to accurately prepare legal documents, correspondence, and reports.
- Ability to calculate payment balances, interest, and costs.
- Excellent organization and time management skills required to handle a high volume of files and file turnover.
- Excellent command of Microsoft Office software or other comparable document production software.
- Outstanding attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work in a team environment possessing excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to complete assignments with minimal supervision and/or direction.
- Ability to handle several time-sensitive projects simultaneously.
- Work occasionally requires more than 35 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position. Flexibility in work schedule around breaks and lunch period is required.
