Position Overview:
Layfield is looking for an experienced Maintenance Supervisor to lead our maintenance program in our Edmonton Plant. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe, efficient and cost-effective operation of all facility, building, grounds and production equipment through proactive maintenance planning, team leadership, regulatory compliance, contractor management and continuous improvement initiatives. This role ensures equipment reliability, facility upkeep and the effective execution of preventive and corrective maintenance programs to support operational objectives.
This working supervisor role is based in our Edmonton Plant with a standard work schedule of Monday to Friday (8:00 AM to 4:30 PM). Overtime may be required occasionally to address maintenance requirements as our Edmonton Plant operates 24-7.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Prepares and manages the annual maintenance budget, ensuring expenditures are controlled and aligned with organizational objectives.
- Provides training, coaching, mentoring, and development opportunities for maintenance staff to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company standards.
- Completes performance reviews through the Talent Management System and addresses attendance, conduct, and performance issues in a timely manner.
- Participate in recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, and retention of maintenance personnel.
- Conducts regular maintenance team meetings, safety meetings, and toolbox talks.
- Develop staffing plans and schedules to ensure adequate coverage for maintenance activities.
- Promotes a positive safety culture and ensures compliance with all company policies and procedures.
- Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with vendors, contractors, and service providers supporting maintenance operations.
- Oversee contractor activities and ensure all contractors comply with company safety, environmental, and operational requirements.
- Acts as a working supervisor, balancing leadership responsibilities with direct involvement in maintenance activities to support operational requirements and develop the skills of maintenance team members.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensures compliance with all applicable Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) legislation, company safety standards, environmental regulations, fire codes, and building codes.
- Conducts regular workplace inspections, hazard assessments, and maintenance safety audits.
- Ensures proper implementation and compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, fall protection, and other safe work procedures.
- Participates in incident and near-miss investigations and ensures corrective actions are implemented and tracked to completion.
- Maintains records of inspections, certifications, permits, and maintenance-related regulatory requirements.
- Ensures all maintenance personnel maintain required certifications, qualifications, and safety training.
Building & Facility Maintenance
- Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive Preventive Maintenance Program for all building systems and facility infrastructure.
- Ensures building systems are monitored, inspected, and maintained to minimize downtime and maximize reliability. Building systems include power distribution, HVAC systems, heating equipment, ventilation systems, compressed air systems, exhaust and filtration systems, festoon tracks, power cords, lighting systems, and related infrastructure.
- Ensures the main office building is maintained in a professional and functional condition, including office layouts, furniture installation, workspace modifications, flooring, and building repairs.
- Oversees grounds maintenance activities, including landscaping, snow removal, parking lot maintenance, waste removal, and general site appearance.
Equipment Maintenance & Reliability
- Develops, schedules, and executes preventive and predictive maintenance programs for all production and support equipment.
- Prioritizes maintenance work requests and assigns resources to maximize equipment uptime and operational efficiency.
- Works closely with Production, Fabrication, and Operations Management to establish maintenance priorities and coordinate planned maintenance activities.
- Responds to emergency equipment failures and coordinates corrective actions to minimize operational disruptions.
- Maintains accurate maintenance records, repair histories, inspection reports, and equipment documentation.
- Conducts root cause analysis (RCA) on recurring equipment issues and implements corrective actions to prevent future failures.
- Ensures maintenance activities are completed in a timely manner and comply with quality and safety standards.
Maintenance Planning, CMMS & Inventory Management
- Administers and maintains the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Reviews, prioritizes, schedules, and closes maintenance work orders.
- Develops weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance schedules.
- Tracks maintenance backlog and ensures completion of preventive maintenance tasks.
- Generates and analyzes maintenance reports to identify performance trends and improvement opportunities.
- Maintains adequate spare parts inventory and ensures parts are properly stored, catalogued, and tracked.
- Sources and procures maintenance materials, tools, and equipment as required.
- Evaluates spare parts inventory levels to balance operational reliability and inventory costs.
- Coordinates external service providers and specialized maintenance contractors when required.
Continuous Improvement
- Sustains and promotes 5S standards within the maintenance department and throughout maintenance work areas.
- Ensures cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of the Maintenance Shop.
- Identifies opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintenance efficiency, safety performance, and operating costs.
- Assists in the development, design, modification, and fabrication of new or improved plant processes.
- Participates in Plant Continuous Improvement and support implementation of approved initiatives.
- Develops and implements best practices that improve maintenance processes and operational effectiveness.
Performance Metrics & Reporting
- Monitors and reports on key maintenance performance indicators.
- Develops action plans and improvement initiatives to achieve maintenance and operational targets.
Emergency Response
- Participate in facility emergency response planning and preparedness activities.
- Provides on-call support and leadership for critical maintenance issues and emergency breakdowns as required.
Required Skills & Knowledge:
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate, plan, organize and supervise repairs to maintenance related work and modifications.
- Ability to communicate with technical specialists and to interpret technical drawings and specification documents.
- Ability to work in a team environment dealing with people from various disciplines to achieve goals and to identify and resolve problems.
- Strong working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and facility systems.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proven problem-solving abilities.
- Driven, self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.
- Independent but able to work well within a team environment.
Education & Experience:
- Millwright, Mechanical Technology Certificate or a combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of five (5) years industry experience in an industrial, fabrication, or manufacturing environment.
- Minimum two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
