POSITION SUMMARY
The Shipping Lead Hand oversees the day-to-day operations of our shipping and receiving department, leading a team responsible for loading and unloading freight, inventory accuracy, and safe, on-time shipment of sold product. This role combines hands-on floor leadership with coordination across sales, operations, and other departments, and includes responsibility for training, scheduling, and performance management within the shipping team.
This is a full-time position for 40 hours/week and 8 hours/weekday.
Work hours are between Monday – Friday from 7:00am – 3:30pm.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and oversee the shipping and receiving team, including loading/unloading of product for freight carriers, customers, and third-party/expedited carriers
- Ensure all outgoing products meet company shipping standards and sales specifications before they leave the building
- Coordinate shipping logistics to ensure orders go out on schedule, including prioritizing urgent or same-day shipments
- Lead weekly safety/toolbox talks with the shipping team and promote a strong on-floor safety culture
- Act as the direct point of contact with sales and management on shipping-related issues
- Create and maintain standard operating procedures for the shipping department
- Ensure staff are properly trained and certified (forklift, crane, rigging, pallet/crating, shipping and receiving procedures)
- Identify and train a backup lead to cover absences
- Oversee receiving of returned/core product, inspect for missing components, and ensure accurate records and documentation
- Ensure incoming product is itemized and stored in a timely, organized manner
- Manage supply levels for shipping consumables (tape, wrap, pallets, etc.)
- Lead the company's annual inventory count and reconciliation
- Assign and delegate daily tasks across the shipping team
- Provide labour support to other departments as needed
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas throughout the shipping and warehouse spaces
- Conduct employee performance reviews (probationary and annual) and partner with HR on coaching, discipline, and termination matters as needed
- Investigate and report on workplace near-misses
- Participate in regular production and operations meetings, including inventory and stock reporting
- Support sustainability practices such as reusing pallets/crates and minimizing waste
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Vision requirements include close vision. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions, moderate to loud noise environments, and is required to operate heavy equipment such as forklifts and overhead cranes.
