POSITION TITLE: Kitchen Crew Member

SALARY RANGE: $18.50 per hour
REPORTS TO: Hospitality Operations Manager
EDUCATION: Ontario Secondary School Diploma
TECHNICAL: Cafe, Kitchen experience or similar restaurant environment preferred
CERTIFICATION: Safe Food Handlers and Smart Serve certifications necessary
SUMMARY:
The Hospitality Services department in Brantford consists of The Belmont and Golden Grounds Coffee House. The position will report directly to the Hospitality Operations Manager, and Brantford Hospitality Supervisor. In this position, you will be focused on the daily cafe style kitchen operations within the Belmont on the Brantford Campus. The successful individual in this role will be highly motivated to work in a fast-paced environment, have great attention to detail, written and verbal communication, time management and organizational skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Recognizing that the role encompasses a broad and wide variety of responsibilities, it is important to note that not all functions are contained within this definition, and the position itself should be ever changing and adaptive to best meet the needs of the Students’ Union and its members. Specific roles and responsibilities allocated to the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operate in accordance with the Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles, by-laws and policies of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union;
- Following all health and safety policies and procedures, using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when required, and promptly reporting any workplace hazards to a manager immediately;
- Remain knowledgeable of all applicable departmental and human resources policies and procedures of the Students’ Union, and abide by such;
- Remain certified and up-to-date in Safe Food Handler training, as well as uphold and enforce all health regulations pertaining to the storage, preparation, and delivery of food and beverage products;
- While serving alcohol, protect the establishment and its patrons by remaining certified and up-to-date in Smart Serve training, and adhere to the safe service of alcohol by following all alcohol beverage control policies as outlined by the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario and the Students’ Union, including but not limited to:
- verifying customer ages prior to serving, and routinely assessing customers to ensure they can safely be served;
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment through regular cleaning and sanitation tasks within the kitchen, such as but not limited to:
- Sweeping, mopping, and cleaning tables, counters, shelves and walls,
- Removing garbage, recycling and kitchen food waste as needed, and properly place in designated containers.
- Exceptional guest service through maintaining high product quality and a professional atmosphere in The Belmont, as well as during catering events;
- Assist with product deliveries, ensuring all items on the order list are present and in good condition, not expired and by putting away all items in their designated storage locations while abiding by proper item rotation, first-in first-out (FIFO);
- Prepare menu items, such as but not limited to, salads, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts;
- Ensure daily prep levels, and all other duties assigned, are completed prior to the end of shift;
- Assist with caterings through room set-up, meal preparation, serving, take-down and clean-up;
- When required, fill shifts at Golden Grounds Coffee House;
- Other duties as assigned by the Hospitality Operations Manager, or Brantford Hospitality Supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work will mainly be completed standing or walking around the establishment(s), as well as the following physical demands are required:
- Walking and standing as a major job function;
- Carrying and transporting objects of various sizes up to a maximum of 50lbs;
- Pushing or pulling contents that weigh a maximum of 75lbs;
- Stretching, reaching, bending, stooping, crouching and/or kneeling for short periods of time; and
- There is potential you may be exposed to mental health crises and/or personal disclosures of violence/harassment when working.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- The work term begins in mid-August, 2026 and concludes by April 30 2027;
- Full-time, contract position, with an expectation to work 30-40hrs a week;
- Regular hours of operation for The Belmont are 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Thursday, and 8:00am to 4:00pm Friday;
- Late evening and weekend hours are occasionally to be expected to cover special events/caterings; and
- Due to the nature of the hospitality industry, it should be noted that hours may vary, often being irregular, and may be modified at any time by the Hospitality Operations Manager, or Brantford Hospitality Supervisor.
