The Opportunity
Keyano College’s School of Trades & Technology seeks an experienced Contract Instructor for the Heavy Equipment Operator program. The instructor will provide classroom, practical, and field-based training to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and safe work practices needed for entry-level employment as heavy equipment operators.
This one-year contract begins in late August 2026. This is an open contract position contingent upon program demand and student enrollment. The instructor will be scheduled only when program intakes are confirmed. Compensation is provided only for approved instructional and related duties during scheduled program delivery.
Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide theoretical and practical instruction, utilize five Caterpillar-specific simulators, and conduct field training as outlined in the approve.
- Foster a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.
- Demonstrate safe operation of heavy equipment and reinforce industry best practices.
- Assess student performance through practical evaluations, assignments, and examinations.
- Provide timely coaching, feedback, and support to enhance student success.
- Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and student records.
- Ensure all training complies with applicable safety legislation, organizational policies, and program standards.
- Inspect equipment and training areas prior to use and report any maintenance or safety concerns.
- Collaborate with program staff to support ongoing improvement of curriculum, instructional materials, and student outcomes.
- Participate in instructor orientation, meetings, and other duties related to program delivery as required.
Qualifications
Required Qualification:
- Minimum five (5) years of recent industry experience operating heavy equipment in construction, mining, road building, or related industries.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in delivering workplace training, coaching, mentoring, or facilitating adult learning.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safe operation of equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, articulated haul trucks, and other heavy machinery.
- Strong understanding of workplace health and safety regulations and operating procedures.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with learners from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency with basic Microsoft computer applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and record-keeping
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence with a satisfactory driver's abstract.
Preferred
- Previous experience teaching or instructing in a post-secondary, corporate, or industry training environment.
- Experience conducting practical skills assessments.
- Industry certifications related to heavy equipment operation and safety.
- Willing to travel to remote communities and remain for extended periods as needed.
- Flexible and adaptable to changing schedules, including evenings, weekends, and off-site training.
