Job Summary:
The Certified Utility Arborist performs a variety of skilled arboriculture tasks, which might include tree risk assessments, hazard tree assessments, tree inventories/appraisals, preparation of arborists reports, job estimating, arboricultural consulting services, as well as assistance with all aspects of Utility Vegetation Management work. Certified Utility Arborist directs and oversees the work of utility vegetation management crews and contractors engaged in the work, ensuring schedules, procedures and established performance and safety standards are met. Considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised as part of this job.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Carries out technical tree work as a Certified Utility Arborist (CUA) in line with industry standards and safety practices, including use of chainsaws, pruning saws, chippers, dielectrically tested tools and related arborist and tree service equipment.
- · Conducts tree risk assessments, develops tree preservation strategies, inspects sites and trees for damage and hazards, perform job estimating, tree inventories, and tree appraisals, prepares arborists reports, and provides arboricultural consultation services as required.
- · Inspects and identifies diseased trees or trees posing an actual or potential hazard to public safety; determines required treatment; undertakes emergency control action as required.
- · Provides information, assistance, and interpretation to the Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN), internal and external stakeholders regarding arboriculture and urban forestry related policies, regulations, and procedures.
- · Works closely with the TWN’s Public Works Manager and TWN’s contractors engaged in construction and land development work that takes place on TWN’s Reserve#3 as well as on lands governed by the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (MST Development Corporation).
- · Prepares and maintains accurate records, files and correspondence related to the work performed.
- · Safely operates tools and equipment associated with arboriculture work including operating an aerial lift truck, pruning, rigging, cabling, and tree falling.
- · Occasionally performs tree climbing activities to undertake required tree maintenance work.
- · Work collaboratively with the Manager to manage and coordinate all key areas of the Vegetation Management program, including Utility Vegetation Management:
- o Managing, reviewing, tracking and reporting on BC Hydro/client work packages
- o Field visits to review new work packages and conduct site safety and quality inspections
- o Supporting crew supervisors with scheduling, logistics and technical support
- o Monitoring project performance, writing up project summaries and reports
- provides support and assistance to managers when needed
- Works with Crew Leads, VM Coordinator and Manager on developing career opportunities and career development plans for crew members, as well as strategies for new hires.
- Provide other administrative support as required
Education/Experience
- BC Utility Arborist certificate of qualification required.
- Current PSSP certificate preferred.
- Falling endorsement considered an asset.
- Electric utility tree trimming/climbing experience preferred.
- Understanding and implementation of the process of safely ascending tree canopies at all heights.
- Minimum 3 years experience.
- Strong tree and shrub identification skills.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Valid provincial driver's license. Licensed to drive a 5-ton vehicle and air brake endorsement considered an asset.
- Ability to work safely as part of a team and possess the willingness to learn and progress.
- Preferred background in Forestry, Horticulture or Landscaping.
- First Aid certification preferred.
Technical Skills
- Provides line clearing and tree trimming services for residential, commercial, municipal, major electric utility providers, and rail customers.
- Operate as an active crew member with supporting ground crew and crew leader.
- Perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully for clients.
- Pruning, thinning, and removing deadwood throughout the tree canopy.
- Removal of hazardous trees.
- Removal or trimming of trees and brush encroaching onto utility or transportation rights of ways
- Properly maintain, prepare, and operate all tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts and more.
- Responsible for job site set up, clean up.
- Abide by Inlailawatash and industry safety policies and procedures.

Travel: Travel will be required for meetings or training and fieldwork.
Working Hours: 40 hours a week

Compensation: $34 - $48.00 per hour plus full employer funded benefits and company pension plan.
