If you are passionate about commercial insurance and share the ambition to revolutionize the commercial insurance space, we are currently on the lookout for a Senior Underwriter in our Marine Cargo Team.
Reporting to the Underwriting Team Leader, the Senior Underwriter's main responsibilities include risk analysis of files submitted by brokers, and will be responsible for underwriting the requests while ensuring that the quality of the risks underwritten is adequate to achieve the maximum profitability sought. He or she determines the terms and pricing of risks and, where necessary, calls on the expertise of the Team. He or she must respect established internal standards and procedures and, where necessary, obtain the authorization of the team leader where required. In the event of a risk rejection, he or she must be able to justify the reasons for the rejection with a succinct argument.
Main Responsibilities
New Business
- Ensure liaison with brokers in order to negotiate and determine insurance rates, terms and conditions.
- Develop, underwrite and service new business in accordance with the guidelines of the various programs and contracts.
- Initiate and maintain a privileged relationship with brokers by providing them with top-quality service
- Represent the company at industry events, as required
- Develop business relationships with existing and new brokers through marketing visits
Renewals
- Provide guidance to Junior Underwriters for negotiating and issuing renewals according to program and contract guidelines
- Collaborate with colleagues on current and future opportunities
- Verify and understand insurance policies, wordings and standards
- Confirm and approve that underwriting standards reflects contracts and meet program needs
- Review certificate referrals with Junior Underwriters to ensure policy/contract compliance.
Endorsements
- Provide guidance to Junior Underwriters for negotiating and issuing requested endorsements and pricing according to program.
- Approve cancellation of policies forwarded by Junior Underwriters.
Profile
- 5 to 10 years Marine Cargo Insurance experience
- Have an insurance diploma, an asset
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with a wide range of colleagues and brokers.
- Analytical and decision-making skills supported by solid technical knowledge
- Ability to synthesize information
- Adaptability and flexibility in the face of change
- Good communication skills
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Sense of responsibility and priorities
- High level of service, always in solution mode, for the benefit of our fast-growing customer base
- Computer skills – good working knowledge of MS Office, Lotus Notes experience an asset.
