The incumbent performs various nursing duties in a professional capacity and administers medical care according to Doctor's Orders, Medical Directives, as per College of Nursing Standards of Practice.
The nurse functions as a member of the multidisciplinary team, providing timely and effective health care to students at Laurier. Using current knowledge and a high level of communication skills, to maintain a confidential, safe environment for individual students regarding frequently asked questions, education and health teaching; providing reassurance and ongoing support of their physical and emotional health. This includes clinical nursing, urgent assessment and acute first aid, health education and promotion, counseling and crisis intervention as well as ongoing medical treatments for students and provision of acute first aid and WSIB initial contact for faculty and staff.
Contacts range from the University Community to various medical professionals and institutions. The major part of this position focuses on patient care, education and support. The incumbent will handle confidential medical information daily, works independently, and must exercise judgment and discretion in the performance of their duties.
Assesses each client's health and provides recommendations based on the assessment. This includes triaging of patients requesting same day appointments. Excellent assessment skills required to determine if medical concerns require same day assessment by a physician, or if presenting concerns can be deferred until a booked appointment available within a week.
Provision of medical care within the scope of nursing practice and in conjunction with existing medical directives.
Acting as a front line clinical assessor for students presenting with mental health and psychological issues at Student Wellness Centre, the Nurse will assess the needs of students at the time of triage and determine appropriate clinical intervention which may include referral to Counsellor for crisis or intake referral, booked appointment for assessment by physician, referral to Accessible Learning Centre for academic accommodation, referral to Academic advisor for academic consideration or referral to community crisis services and advocacy for students with the above noted internal and external community partners.
Accurately document information on the clinical record in a comprehensive, concise manner reflecting objective observations and subjective patient reporting, inclusive of assessment, management plan and interventions.
Health teaching on various medical matters using good communication skills and good knowledge base, including advising patients of results and need for follow-up .
Deals with confidential material daily. Complies with medical-legal requirements of a health care facility.
Maintains up to date medical records; manages patient recall system; and prepares medical excuse slips for ill students unable to write exams or complete assignments.
Assist physicians with medical procedures, i.e. sutures, suture removal, dressings, etc.
Dispense medication as ordered by the physician and pursuant to medical directives in the absence of a physician - good knowledge of birth control medications and immunizations. (Delegated pharmaceutical dispensing.)
Requires current knowledge of issues of sexuality, i.e. HIV, family planning, pregnancy termination, gender identity.
Administers allergy injections, immunotherapy, immunizations, Tb skin tests.
Administers other injectable medications such as methotrexate, Iron, B12, and other prescription medications as approved by lead physician pursuant to department policy.
Arranges appointments with specialists for referrals, co-ordinates tests and documentation required for referral if necessary.
Responsible for managing, organizing, prioritizing and directing all medical data for Laurier physicians and patients. This includes results laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging results and consultation reports from specialists.
Provides first aid and documentation for work related injuries for WSIB reporting through SHERM office.
Registered Nurse with a current certificate from the College of Nurses of Ontario plus minimum two (2) years work related experience;
Experience with Practice Solutions EMR preferred;
Highly developed and proven effective interpersonal skills where issues are complex;
Emergency experience and physical assessment skills a definite asset;
Psychiatric nursing experience an asset
Experience in working with university age group;
Able to work flexible hours.
This is a part-time, continuing position, 35 hours biweekly. The schedule includes 3 shifts one week (21 hours), 2 shifts the following week(14 hours), and repeat.
Level: F
Rate of Pay: $45.34 to $47.94 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $51.82 per hour.
Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
