Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer / Technologist to join our dynamic team. This role involves designing, analyzing, and improving mechanical systems within manufacturing, construction, or related industries.
Responsible for designing, developing, troubleshooting, and managing mechanical systems for industrial robotics and automation platforms. Key tasks include CAD design, prototyping, 3D printing, machine shop processes, vendor coordination, and documentation with revision control.
The role involves managing component traceability, configuration throughout the product lifecycle, and collaborating with cross-functional teams from concept to deployment and improvement. Ideal candidates are hands-on, skilled in building, troubleshooting, and enhancing mechanical and robotic systems.
Responsibilities
- Integration of mechanical and electrical components into cohesive and field-ready robotic platforms
- Ensure mechanical structures meet industrial safety and performance standards
Prototyping, Testing & Optimization
- Design, model, prototype, and fabricate components and systems using in-house resources, metal/polymer 3D printing (Markforged or PLA printers, etc.), machine shops, and external vendors
- Perform mechanical troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and failure investigations to identify and implement effective corrective actions
- Execute validation tests, performance trials, and iterative optimization cycles
- Troubleshoot system-level failures and drive continuous improvements in performance and reliability
Documentation & Quality Assurance
- Maintaining engineering drawings, BoMs, procedures, and test plans
- Generate and maintain engineering drawings, bills of materials (BoMs), and manufacturing documentation.
- Manage part numbering, revision control, engineering change orders (ECOs), and release processes.
- Contribute to technical manuals, training materials, and regulatory documentation
- Promote and participate in a culture of engineering discipline, traceability, and compliance
- Maintain traceability between CAD models, drawings, purchased components, assemblies, and deployed units.
- Ensure accurate configuration management of products throughout their lifecycle, including archiving superseded designs and documentation.
- Support Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) processes to ensure engineering data integrity and version control using either our ERP system or any other system we are open to discuss.
- Contribute to technical manuals, training materials, and regulatory documentation
- Promote and participate in a culture of engineering discipline, traceability, and compliance.
Field Support & Lifecycle Management
- Provide technical commissioning, operator training, and site support
- Contribute to customer-facing reports and help resolve technical issues post-deployment
- Track product field performance and recommend enhancements for future versions
Qualifications
- Technologist or Engineering degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in robotics or mechanical development.
- Proficiency in CAD (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or equivalent), FEA, and mechanical design best practices.
- Experience with collaborative robotic arms and end-of-arm tooling, and mobility platforms would be an asset.
- Knowledge of industrial automation standards (e.g., ISO 10218, ISO 12100)
- Experience working with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, software) and external vendors
- Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to work with a variety of tools.
- This role offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity for professionals committed to engineering excellence. Candidates should demonstrate a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
What Makes Someone Successful in This Role
- Enjoys designing, building, troubleshooting, and improving real-world mechanical systems
- Highly organized with strong attention to inventory management, BoMs, revision control, and documentation
- Naturally curious and capable of reverse engineering mechanical systems, assemblies, and facilities when documentation is unavailable
Additional Assets (Preferred but Not Required)
- Experience in hazardous or regulated industrial environments (e.g., shipbuilding, oil & gas, aerospace)
- Ability to lead field deployment and support activities at customer sites
