We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Family Law Clerk to join our legal team. Responsibilities
- Manage family law files from initial intake through resolution, including litigation, negotiation, settlement conferences, motions, and trial preparation.
- Draft and prepare correspondence, court forms, pleadings, affidavits, financial statements, briefs, and other legal documents.
- Prepare and organize materials for motions, case conferences, settlement conferences, trial management conferences, and trials.
- Prepare and maintain financial disclosure and organize supporting documentation.
- Assist with support calculations, including child support and spousal support, and work with software such as DivorceMate where applicable.
- Manage undertakings, requests for information, disclosure, productions, and follow-up correspondence.
- Maintain limitation dates, court deadlines, appearances, and other critical dates.
- Coordinate service and filing of court materials through the appropriate court processes.
- Prepare and organize briefs, books of documents, affidavits, exhibits, and other materials for court.
- Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, process servers, and other third parties.
- Maintain accurate and well-organized electronic and physical files.
- Assist lawyers with legal research and preparation for hearings and other court attendances as required.
- Review incoming correspondence and court documents and ensure appropriate follow-up.
- Assist with docketing, billing, and general file administration.
- Perform other duties as required to support the family law practice.
Skills
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Family Law Clerk in Ontario.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario family law procedures and the Family Law Rules.
- Experience with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and/or Ontario Court of Justice.
- Strong understanding of family law litigation, including motions, conferences, disclosure, support, property/equalization, and parenting matters.
- Excellent drafting, proofreading, and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies or missing information in legal documents and financial disclosure.
- Ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients and counsel.
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Experience with DivorceMate, or other legal practice management software is an asset.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative while also working effectively as part of a team.
- Law Clerk diploma or equivalent legal experience is preferred.
