Labourer II – Transfer Station

Reporting to the Foreman, Utilities, the Labourer II - Transfer Station provides support for the City’s solid waste operations. As a supporting member of the crew, working under minimal supervision, the Labourer II is responsible for performing a variety of manual tasks such as the maintenance of the City’s solid waste cart inventory, station site, operation of small equipment, and interacting with the public. The Labourer II must be able to work scheduled shifts, including weekends and overtime as needed.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintain and organize waste cart inventory, including assembly, delivery and repair
Maintenance and organization for Transfer Station
Assist with other solid waste programs including Christmas tree collection
Provide information on recycling and waste disposal to the public

The successful candidate will have a minimum of Grade 12 Diploma and possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License. Previous solid waste and recycling experience and knowledge of a shop environment is an asset. The candidate must be mechanically inclined, competent in using hand tools and small equipment. Good organizational and customer service skills, with the ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing are essential. The ability to make practical, fair and objective decisions pertaining to meeting customer needs, performing transfer station operations and maintenance in a cost effective manner is an important skill in this job. This is a physically demanding position; incumbents will be required to work in a variety of adverse conditions. A current driver’s abstract will be required at the time of interview.
This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement.
Rate of Pay: $22.41 - $24.61 per hour
Hours of Work: 80 hours biweekly (both weekday/weekend work will be required)
