Summary:
The Tsay Keh Dene community is looking for a Lead Carpenter to champion the completion of seasonal capital and housing projects relating to existing and new homes and related infrastructure. There is also potential for leading and advising on planning and delivery of preventive maintenance programs. Working in the community of Tsay Keh Dene (TKD), located on the Nation’s traditional territory, this employee will work to ensure that all building codes and safety regulations are being followed and met and that the overall safety and maintenance goals of the housing and capital department are being delivered. Qualified carpenters are to have reputable skills in framing and concrete work as well as being able to perform various other finishing and construction tasks.

The Candidate possesses core competencies and a high level of energy and physical fitness to perform the work and has good interpersonal skills. This worker has good written and verbal communication skills and communicates with Tradespersons, Engineers, engineering aides/technicians, contractors, and equipment operators, as well as with co-workers, building managers, homeowners, renters, and the supervisor, regarding daily tasks and assignments.
About the Community
Tsay Keh Dene First Nation is a Sekani band in the Northern Interior of British Columbia. Tsay Keh Dene means "People of the Rocks". The TKD band council oversees an expansive territory of 32 000 km, which offers limitless recreational and outdoor activities. The community of less than 300 residents is located at the north end of the Williston Reservoir in the northern regions of the Rocky Mountain Trench. Access to the community is via logging roads from Mackenzie, or by plane via Ootsa Air from Prince George.

Job Duties:
· Delivers quality carpentry work as required to complete renovations, maintenance work orders and other assigned projects.
· Oversees projects from start to finish, working to complete tasks on schedule, and within scope.
· Manages sub-contractors by locating, evaluating, and selecting sub-contractors; monitoring and controlling performance.
· Ability to construct new housing (potentially tiny homes) and community structures per blueprints.
· Conducts inspections and identifies deficiencies using standard inspection and work order documentation.
· Plans and delivers preventive maintenance measures.
· Completes maintenance work orders to repair deficiencies.
· Prepares budgets and completes orders for supplies and materials.
· Supervises carpenters and labourers on projects and as assigned.
· Communicates with co-workers, supervisor, Tradespersons, Engineers, engineering aides/technicians, contractors, and equipment operators, other departments in carrying out daily tasks and assignments.
· Ensures adherence to building codes and obtaining permits or certification if applicable
· Coordinates electrical and plumbing/mechanical work.
Job Requirements:
Education and Experience
· Journeyman Carpenter Certificate from a recognized provincial training authority is not required but will be considered ad asset
· 1 – 3 years experience.
· Valid BC driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Able to accurately read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and understand verbal instructions.
· Excellent practical knowledge and application of workplace safety, safe lifting and handling procedures, and proper tool usage.
· Be self-motivated, reliable, flexible, and proactive with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
· Have reliable means of transportation and supply own tool pouch with basic hand tools.
· Skilled in minor plumbing and electrical work related to housing maintenance and renovation projects.
· High level of workmanship related to maintenance, construction, and inspection procedures.
· Knowledge of light equipment operation principles, practices, and procedures.
· Skilled in the operation of a variety of carpentry equipment, hand tools.
· Willingness to learn and obtain training and certifications as needed.
· Supervisory experience is considered an asset.
· Experience working with Indigenous populations and in remote communities is considered an asset.
Working Conditions:
· Regularly works in outside weather conditions in a northern climate.
· Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, traffic, and risk of electrical shock.
· The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud at times.
· Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
· Frequent lifting of 35-50 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 75-100 or more.
· Lifting is often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces or at heights above the ground
