We are hiring a full-time, permanent Technologist, Engineering position working out of Edmonton, AB.

The Engineering Technologist is accountable for assisting in the preparation of detailed designs for Distribution electrical systems, and completion of projects with time spans of up to 6 months. You must understand principles of electricity and structures, and have ability to perform calculations for design. All designs must abide City of Edmonton, EPCOR and any related standards, policies and guidelines. You would be accountable to the Manager, Capital Engineering and operate within the context and prescribed limits established by the Manager, Capital Engineering.
What you’d be responsible for

Providing input to the Engineering plans and directions, and ensuring on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.

Ensuring all designs are in compliance the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, and EPCOR Distribution Standards.

Collecting and analyzing technical information to propose solutions to issues before, during, and after project activity.

Obtaining all required permitting and approvals necessary for construction including easement, Ministerial Consent, Railway Crossing, ULA, pipeline crossing/proximity agreements, Tree Permits, Historical Resources Act of Alberta, River Valley Area permit, Parkland access etc.

Preparing design and construction packages for Distribution design projects using required software.

Performing engineering calculations including voltage drop, cable pulling, sag and tension, conductor swing, uplift and pole loading calculations, guy and anchor calculation and analysis.

Coordinating work with project managers, drafters, field crews, contractors and customers for various projects taking place throughout the City of Edmonton.

Liaising with customers, the design team and project management group for regular communication and feedback on work progress.

Leading site walkthroughs and design meetings with clients and other stakeholders.

Preparing, reviewing, and marking for changes detailed in structural and electrical drawings.

Communicating with customers or consultants via in-person, telephone, email, and/ or letters.

Completing detailed designs for overhead and underground projects such as 5kV, 15kV and 25kV primary asset lifecycle replacements, new feeder installations, circuit reconfigurations, relocations, and primary line voltage conversion, etc.
- Displaying a high level of understanding of EPCOR’s UD Schematics, Circuit Plans, design philosophies and standards.

Managing workload, maintaining records, meeting all of the indicated deadlines and maintaining specified metrics

Providing technical assistance to project managers, contractors, junior employees, field crews and customers for the purposes of conforming to the Canadian Electrical Code, the Alberta Electrical Utility Code and EPCOR Distribution Standards.

Knowledgable of EPCOR’s Distribution Standards, Customer Connection Guide, and Volume 7 and when to utilize their applications.

What’s required to be successful

Post-secondary Diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering Technology.

Eligible for registration as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with A.S.E.T.
- 4+ years of directly related experience.

Electrical Distribution Engineering experience is preferred.

Understanding of electrical and underground principles.

Strong knowledge of design and drafting standards for distribution electrical systems.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, such as Word and Excel.

Experience with GE Small World Electric Office, SPIDACalc, Pull Planner, Microstation would be considered an asset.

Wage: starting at $47.18; Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and is subject to change based on the ratification of the new Collective Agreement.
