THE ROLE
The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer is accountable for design, development, installation and commissioning of plant and manufacturing equipment, field equipment, jigs & fixtures, and physical alterations to plant assets. The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer will be project focused and will be part of a small interdisciplinary design team. Additionally, the leadership nature of the position reflects that the lead engineer will take full ownership of 1-2 major design projects and is empowered to take all actions necessary to ensure the success of those projects including accepting responsibility for the completeness and accuracy of the work executed by those on their team. The successful lead engineer will report to the ELT and the board on the status of their projects and will retain the ultimate responsibility for ensuring they are executed on time and on budget. This position is moderately strategic in nature and requires the ability to create and transmit medium term vision and energize and focus a small group towards that vision.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create and execute the vision for MTAG projects.
- Lead teams on up to 2 projects and focus the members on high ROI and execution; provide a resistive force to non-value-added work and objectives from customer sources.
- Oversee and participate in the preparation of all electro-mechanical PWP’s from team members and provide technical guidance and coaching for success.
- Execute difficult and moderately complex decision making to gain alignment between project and company goals. Ensure stakeholders are adequately informed.
- Take ownership over all aspects of project execution and coordinate and oversee installation, commissioning, and turnover.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities within the department.
- Identify and support training opportunities and team development initiatives lead by MTAG manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent planning and organisational skills

- Strong independent work ethic: ability to direct action towards a common goal without supervision
- Strong analysis, problem solving and identification skills
- Excellent communication skills across a broad range of technical backgrounds
- Project management experience and equivalent moderate skill set
- Mechanical Engineer with P.Eng. designation or equivalent in given jurisdiction
- Minimum 5 years of experience in design of novel electro-mechanical products
- Expertise in SolidWorks or equivalent CAD system
- Strong background in Stress analysis
- Experience executing mechanical construction and de-construction
- Deep understanding of machine control systems will be an asset
- Experience with processing of composites and plastics will be an asset
- Minimum 5 years experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment performing design and commissioning activities
- Occasional travel will be required up to 15% of the time and typically batched at project start and end within North America
- SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mechanical aptitude, general manufacturing, and fabrication process knowledge
