Location: 5920 MacLeod Trail SW, Calgary, Alberta
Type: Full-time, Permanent
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:15 am to 4:30 pm, flexibility required
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Human Resources and working in partnership with all members of Intercare’s Corporate and Site Leadership teams, the Labour Relations Specialist (LRS) will provide professional and timely labour relations support, expertise, advice, education and guidance to ensure the consistency in the delivery of Labour Relations matters across the organization. The LRS will promote and support compliance and interpretation of Employer policies, procedures and Collective Agreements as well as external applicable federal, provincial and AHS legislation and regulations. The LRS will support Intercare leaders with initiating detailed and complete employee investigations, administer the Employer’s Attendance Management and Performance Management program and support the delivery of corporate HR programs, policies and initiatives in a manner that is consistent with the Employer’s Core Values and in alignment with the understanding that all staff have the ability to make a positive difference.
Role Responsibilities:
- Promote Intercare’s vision of being ‘The Heart of Excellence’ by consistently demonstrating and incorporating the Employer’s Core Values into daily practice and promoting dignity, choice and growth of quality continuing care services;
- Maintain and expand on a Labour Relations strategy which is in line with the Employer’s “Just Culture” approach, Core Values, Philosophy and Vision;
- Assists Corporate and sites maintain compliance with internal Human Resource policies and practices as well as applicable legislation; (including Employment Standards Act and Labour Relations Code);
- Ensure compliance with HR-related policies and processes as outlined in the Alberta Health Services Master Services Agreement;
- Monitor and report on labour relations trends and activities; keeps current on employment and labour legislation;
- Proactively identify needs and concerns by observing employee, team and leadership behaviors, trends and events, assessing key HR data and organization performance;
- Provide labour relations support through coaching, guidance and advice to leaders regards best practices which are consistent across the organization;
- Support Intercare Leaders and respond to queries or issues raised including collective agreement interpretation, policy and procedure application, performance management, attendance management, progressive discipline, investigation and provide recommendations and strategies to appropriately address issues leading to resolution;
- Assist leaders in conducting / facilitating employee discussions and/or fact finding interviews in a sensitive and supportive manner;
- Support leaders by providing guidance and advice on appropriate level of discipline to take and preparing all performance management letters when required;
- Design and deliver educational sessions to Employer’s leadership team and front line staff as it pertains to Labour Relations, Employer practices, policies and protocol;
- Work in partnership with the Director of HR and the Assistant Vice President, Administration & Corporate Services and other members of the Employer’s Bargaining Committee to prepare for collective bargaining negotiations, including conducting industry compensation analysis, market research data, and maintaining bargaining files and notes;
- Participate in Labour Management committee meetings as required;
- Provide labour relations input on organization-wide specific initiatives and projects;
- Build positive working relationships with leaders, front line staff and union representatives;
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/Skills/Job Requirements:
- University Degree in Human Resources, Labour Relations or related discipline and / or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of three (3) years labour relations experience in a unionized environment.
- CPHR designation preferred; CPHR candidate in progress will be considered
- Working knowledge of applicable legislation that affects an organization from an employment perspective (Employment Standards, Human Rights etc.).
- Experience supporting multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated flexibility, organizational and time management skills.
- Advanced problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, facilitation and investigational skills.
- Experience with collective agreement interpretation and best practices.
- Experience with grievance procedure discussions/resolutions.
- Demonstrated ability to find opportunity for improvement.
- Ability to build trusting, respectful and positive working relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and also to function effectively as a member of a team.
