Contract Duration: 1 Year Contract Position
Under the supervision of Senior Research Scientist, the Research Analyst will work as part of a collaborative team to examine a range of social, political and ecological factors that affect the provision of essential ecosystem services in Greater Toronto Area. The Research Analyst will be responsible for coordinating and supporting general research activities including literature reviews, geospatial analysis, data analysis and report writing. These activities will directly support ongoing projects related to urban forestry, asset management planning, watershed planning, LID and green infrastructure scenario modelling, ecosystem service valuation, and climate change adaptation planning.
Collects and maintains up-to-date information on or pertinent to urban green infrastructure applied research projects, including the examination of regulating, provisioning, cultural and supporting ecosystem services provided within the TRCA jurisdiction.
Coordinates urban forest studies and strategies, including canopy cover assessments, vegetation community surveys, GIS-based inventories, modelled outputs, policies and management practices or targets associated with municipalities within TRCA's jurisdiction.
Performs crew leader duties, specifically coordinating and scheduling surveys, and training seasonal staff or interns in monitoring, survey or assessment protocols, ensuring Health and Safety compliance while in the field.
Organizes and manages databases, and conducts quality control checks on monitoring, survey or assessment data.
Prepares data summaries, including basic GIS, statistical or trend analysis and interpretation of data.
Conducts systematic literature reviews to close identified knowledge gaps, as needed.
Prepares internal technical briefs or monitoring bulletins.
Supports the development of funding proposals/applications, including preparing draft proposals, circulating for comments.
Works in consultation with the Sr. Research Scientist to create, prepare technical reports for review by internal and external stakeholders.
Coordinates, compiles and / or participates in reviewing and preparing written feedback on urban sustainability research deliverables or related material, including: technical strategies, plans, reports, discussion papers, proposals, EBR postings, etc.
Acts as a key technical resource to support knowledge transfer requests from RKM staff, other TRCA groups/committees, including: preparation of specific presentation slides, written summaries of technical work, participation at meetings or other events.
Delivers presentations at local conferences to increase knowledge dissemination and strengthen RKM networks related to urban ecosystem science and practice.
University degree or college equivalent in ecology, environmental science, environmental studies, urban forestry or a related discipline.
Minimum of one year of experience related to major tasks.
Valid Ontario driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Competency in some or all the following: urban forest survey protocols and models; green infrastructure scenario modelling; ecosystem service valuation; quantitative research methods; qualitative research methods.
General understanding of urban climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies as related to green infrastructure and natural assets.
Proven ability to conduct literature reviews and generate accurate and concise syntheses of major research trends as related to urban sustainability program area.
Proficient in GIS and remote sensing software and statistical software.
General understanding of policies that govern urban forest management, green infrastructure, natural heritage systems management, watershed planning and climate change.
Proficient in GIS and remote sensing software applications.
Proficiency in statistical analysis considered an asset.
Familiarity with green infrastructure / natural asset management planning.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent problem solving, organizational and time management skills.
