Area Supervisor (Roads)

Supervises the activities of repair crews assigned to roads maintenance operations on Regional roads, including surface maintenance, shoulder and roadside repairs, ditch and waterway repairs, and winter maintenance.

Current Assignment: Based heavily on winter maintenance activities; DZ license is not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Knowledge of public works administration, methods, and procedures; road construction and maintenance equipment operation; and surveying, normally acquired through a community college diploma in Engineering Technology (at the Technician or Technologist level) or university degree in Engineering or related field, plus progressively responsible directly related supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with corporate policies and procedures, maintenance manuals, legislation (e.g., health and safety, hazardous materials, transportation of dangerous goods, highway traffic act, drainage, pesticides, regional by-laws), and collective agreements.
  • Ability to keep knowledge current.
  • Analytical skills to research road maintenance equipment/materials, determine priorities, and prepare performance reports.
  • Human relations and organizational skills to organize and coordinate the work of supervised staff; advise, supervise, instruct, and train staff in work methods/procedures; act as a witness in Court if needed; conduct presentations and training to staff and outside groups; respond to public complaints; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and write manuals, reports, correspondence, and instructions.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, and finance/accounting systems.
  • Must have a valid class G drivers license and acceptable driving record upon hire and attain a DZ license within probation.
  • Ability to participate in an official standby/on-call rotation to respond to legislated or time sensitive demands beyond regularly scheduled work hours.
  • Ability to support and project the Region’s values.
