Location: This full-time position is ideally based out of our Brigadoon Village office on Aylesford Lake with regular visits to the Halifax area office, dependent on the needs of the programs throughout the year. This position requires some evening or weekend availability.
The Director of Operations oversees Brigadoon’s year-round programs and facility management, serving as the primary liaison for key partnerships and collaborations. As a key member of the Brigadoon senior management team, the Director is responsible for the strategic planning and achievement of both annual and long-term goals in alignment with the organization's mission.
In this role, the Director will exemplify leadership and professionalism, setting a positive example for permanent staff, campers, program participants, and counselors. They will foster and maintain strong, professional relationships with partners, campers, staff, health professionals, parents, volunteers, supporters, and visitors.
The Director will ensure the effective implementation of all organizational policies and procedures and will carry out any additional duties assigned by the CEO.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Operations Management
- Collaborate with the Senior Management Team to develop, manage, deliver, evaluate, and monitor Brigadoon’s strategic and business plans, focusing on organizational growth, innovation, and best practices.
- Track and report on the achievement of the annual budget and strategic plan goals.
- Oversee the creation and execution of all programs, ensuring they are safe, enjoyable, and engaging for all campers. Aim to provide accessible experiences that foster camper development and leave them feeling stronger and more confident.
- Ensure the effective management and compliance of the state-of-the-art Brigadoon facility.
Strategic Partnerships and Community Relations
- Align with Brigadoon’s strategic plan to cultivate new partnerships across the Atlantic Provinces, advancing our mission and ensuring Brigadoon's interests are well-represented in the community.
- Foster and enhance existing strategic partnerships with organizations such as IWK clinics, other non-profits, and academic institutions.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships and manage contractual agreements effectively.
- Collaborate with the Philanthropy team to support and boost philanthropic revenue efforts.
- Serve as Brigadoon's spokesperson in the community and at presentations as needed.
Human Resources
- Oversee staffing for year-round programs, managing labor budgets in alignment with seasonal needs.
- Provide effective coaching, training, feedback, and recognition to support professional development and maintain a highly motivated and high-performing team.
- Implement and manage training programs to ensure that camp and program staff are proficient in using organizational systems, processes, and tools.
- Ensure the annual completion of the re-accreditation process for CANSPEI.
Qualifications and Characteristics
- Community college diploma or university degree in Recreation, Social Sciences, Education, Administration, Health Disciplines, or equivalent experience (8 years of progressive camp experience).
- Proven skills in problem-solving, analytical thinking, organization, innovation, creativity, and negotiation.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects, develop programs and policies, lead teams, and handle human resource functions effectively and efficiently.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, with experience in facilitating groups and understanding group dynamics.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in managing staff and volunteers.
- Track record of successful partnership development.
- Extensive experience in developing and adhering to strategic plans and budgets.
- Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
