Mechanical Designer / Project Designer
Metal District Fabrication is a growing welding, machining, and fabrication shop based in Dartmouth, NS. We specialize in heavy equipment repairs, custom fabrication, machining, structural steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and mobile welding services.
We're looking for a hands-on Mechanical Designer who enjoys solving real-world manufacturing problems. This isn't a corporate office position—you'll work directly with welders, machinists, and customers to design repair solutions, develop fabrication drawings, reverse engineer existing components, and help bring projects from concept to completion.
What You'll Do
- Design custom fabricated, welded, and machined components.
- Create 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings using Fusion 360.
- Generate fabrication drawings, machining drawings, and CNC plasma profiles.
- Reverse engineer existing parts and equipment using traditional measuring tools and our Revopoint MIRACO Plus 3D scanner.
- Process 3D scan data into usable CAD models and manufacturing drawings.
- Visit customer sites to measure projects and discuss repair or fabrication solutions.
- Collaborate daily with welders and machinists to ensure designs are practical and efficient to manufacture.
- Assist with material take-offs, estimating, and project planning.
- Maintain drawing revisions and project documentation.
- Help improve internal design standards and manufacturing processes.
Qualifications
- Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma, Mechanical Design diploma, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong proficiency with Fusion 360 (preferred) or similar CAD software such as SolidWorks or Inventor.
- Experience producing fabrication and machining drawings.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, welding, and machining.
- Ability to interpret customer concepts and convert them into production-ready drawings.
- Comfortable working independently while managing multiple projects.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
Assets
- Experience with 3D scanning and reverse engineering workflows.
- Experience using Fusion 360's manufacturing workspace.
- Welding or fabrication experience.
- Machining experience.
- Heavy equipment repair experience.
- CNC plasma cutting knowledge.
- Sheet metal and structural steel design experience.
What You'll Work On
Every week is different. Projects may include:
- Heavy equipment repairs
- Custom fabrication
- Structural steel
- Handrails and stairs
- Aluminum fabrication
- Equipment modifications
- Prototype development
- Reverse engineering worn or obsolete components
- Custom machined parts
- Production drawings for shop fabrication
Who You Are
You're someone who enjoys solving problems and seeing your designs become real parts. You're equally comfortable sitting at a CAD workstation, walking through the shop discussing a project with welders, or visiting a customer to measure a machine that needs repair.
You don't wait to be told every step—you ask questions, think ahead, and enjoy finding practical manufacturing solutions.
Compensation
- $25.00–$35.00+/hour, based on experience.
- Full-time, Monday–Friday.
- Opportunities for growth into estimating and project management.
- Diverse work with very little repetitive production design.
- Modern tools including Fusion 360, CNC plasma cutting, and 3D scanning technology.
If you're looking for a position where you'll see your designs built every day and work alongside skilled tradespeople solving unique manufacturing challenges, we'd like to hear from you.
Please submit your resume along with examples of previous CAD, mechanical design, or manufacturing projects if available.
