The Public Affairs Co-op will get first-hand experience and exposure to the fast-paced pharmaceutical industry. The Co-op will provide a supportive role in the public affairs department and play a key role in the development of stakeholder communications, patient educational information, government consultation documents, internal media/policy newsletters, and other special projects that involve stakeholder engagement.
Collaborate cross-functionally to understand how market operations works with other departments at Vertex (including Medical Affairs, Market Access, Marketing and Sales, etc.)
Develop an understanding of the roles and structure of a pharmaceutical company through shadowing, meetings and events
Keep informed of health policy files relevant to the biopharmaceutical industry and update internal team as appropriate
Develop communications, government and stakeholder relations acumen and enhance project management skills Engage with external public relations, marketing, and government relations vendors to support business needs
Understand, initiate and lead internal approval process for communication and patient education materialsDevelop weekly media/policy newsletters to ensure the Canadian team is kept up to date
Develop Canadian-specific communications products, such as: key messaging and talking points/Q&A to articulate Vertex’s value proposition, importance of timely access to approved medicines, and policy positions for use during interactions with external stakeholders.
Work cross functionally with other departments to plan internal events, including internal & external meetings
Ensure compliance with Vertex policies and procedures
Must be currently enrolled in a Master of Communications and-or Journalism and-or Public Relations, MBA, MPA, Master of Public Policy or a post-graduate in public relations with at least 1 year completed
Must be eligible to work in Canada
Proficient in Microsoft programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Requires initiative and the ability to maintain a high level of productivity with minimal supervision
Proven ability to work well in teams and effectively manage multiple assignments and activities simultaneously
Exhibits strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills
