Position Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Centre for Learning, Innovation and Simulation, the Instructional Design Specialist is responsible for providing instructional design support for program and course development for Michener’s in-person, online and hybrid environments.
The Instructional Design Specialist is responsible for providing faculty development in the area of online curriculum development as well as supporting classroom instruction, interprofessional education, and simulation-enhanced education.
This position requires a commitment to constructivist and learner-centered education. A service-oriented approach and commitment to meeting the diverse needs of faculty is a must. The incumbent should be well grounded in educational theory and design.
The incumbent must be responsive to current best-practices in health professions education and faculty development and demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based continuous quality improvement methods.
We are seeking a creative and ambitious individual who can support excellence in our design strategies across multiple projects and advance our use of learning technologies.
Position Responsibilities
Consult with subject matter experts (SMEs), faculty, and program leadership to structure and align course content, delivery, and assessment methods
Apply models of course development such as ADDIE to ensure timely achievement of high-quality course deliverables
Advise on the alignment of course activities across synchronous and asynchronous delivery formats
Develop and mentor faculty in the application of instructional design best-practices, including writing competencies and learning objectives, developing engaging lesson plans, and promoting authentic assessment
Collaborate with Michener education support staff to develop and deliver workshops and professional development activities to address key pedagogical practices, such as effective online facilitation, simulation, and integration of education technology
Ensure that course competencies reflect the overall program competency map and external standards (e.g., national competency framework of the health profession)
Leverage expertise in learning management systems (LMSs) and other education technologies to guide the development of accessible and engaging online, face-to-face, and hybrid delivery methods
Collaborate with faculty and other SMEs to develop best-practice assessments, including written, multiple choice, and performance-based (e.g., simulation, workplace)
Support the continuous quality improvement (CQI) of Michener courses and programs through evaluation, scholarship, academic dialogue, theory, practice, and collaboration with other departments to ensure evidence-based curriculum improvement
Participate in the development and quality assurance of key program documents, including course outlines, competency maps, and assessment scoring guides
Mentor faculty in the application of universal design for learning (UDL) principles and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) standards
Position Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years experience in instructional design and e-learning
Minimum 5 years experience providing faculty development and continuing education
M.Ed. in curriculum design or relevant graduate degree
Demonstrated knowledge of performance and competency-based curricular design
Familiarity with academic approval and accreditation processes
Proven innovative uses of educational technology
Proficiency in designing courses within a Learning Management System (Blackboard Learn an asset)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, develop relationships and manage expectations
Must have advanced organizational skills and ability with excellent attention to detail
Project management experience an asset
Satisfactory Canadian Police Clearance document required upon hire
A demonstrated commitment to client service
