Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Animal Care Assistant to join our team. This position is a hybrid role with a mix of assisting our technicians and veterinarians, reception and kennel duties. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, kind and patient; a team player who is motivated to learn and grow within this dynamic role.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to;
- communication with clients in a professional, efficient and friendly manner in person, over the phone and through email/SMS
- admitting patients for appointments and recording vital signs accurately
- maintaining accurate records in patient files
- assisting veterinarians/technicians when needed in appointments both in exam rooms and in treatment area
- housekeeping duties such as laundry, tidying, vacuuming and mopping, and sanitization protocols
- answering phones in a timely fashion, and discussing with technicians, veterinarians or senior staff when necessary
- billing and invoicing clients, processing insurance claims, creating estimates and consent forms, as well as providing supplementary educational materials
- cleaning, packing and sterilizing surgery instruments properly
- scheduling appointments, processing specialty referrals, and checking in with clients for follow up care
- restraint of cats and dogs in a low-stress, compassionate manner
- filling medical prescriptions, food orders and unpacking daily orders
- maintaining inventory and cleanliness of exam rooms, surgery suite and treatment areas
- following directions dictated by technicians/senior staff and veterinarians
- Attending learning opportunities regarding patient care and treatment
Qualifications
- compassion and patience for all animals, especially those with fear and anxiety
- previous experience working in veterinary medicine is preferred but we are willing to train the right candidate
- ability to handle and restrain patients in a calm, empathetic manner
- strong customer service skills
- effective time-management skills, ability to multi-task and/or prioritize task completion accordingly
- able to work as part of a team with the confidence to pursue tasks independently where appropriate
- strong interpersonal communication skills with both team members and clients
- physical ability to bend, kneel, and lift up to 40-50 lbs unassisted, as well as standing for long periods of time
- Proficiency and professionalism in written communication modes (email, text, etc.)
- Willingness to learn, or existing proficiency in medical terminology and professional verbiage where appropriate
