Position Summary

Seabird College, situated 130 kilometers east of Vancouver in the Fraser Valley, is seeking a qualified teacher to provide Construction and Carpentry instruction to adult learners. Successful candidate will be offered a one-year term, subject to sufficient student enrollment.

Duties and Responsibilities

This 34 week program prepares students for entry into the carpentry trade and provincial apprenticeship program. Students learn how to read and interpret drawings, use specialty equipment, site and building layout, build concrete forms, frame a building as well as interior and exterior detailing. Graduates may choose to further their education by working towards Carpentry Red Seal certification.

The instructor will facilitate learning and evaluate student progress in the classroom, shop and work placement settings; plan, organize and manage learning activities and provide academic advising services to learners in the areas of instruction which include:
Instruct in safe work practices;
Instruct in documentation and organizational skills, tools and equipment, survey instruments and equipment;
Instruct in access, rigging and hoisting equipment, site layout, concrete form work;
Instruct in wood frame construction – floor systems, stair systems, decks and exterior structure, forces acting on a building;
Instill knowledge of and respect for Stó:lō Culture;
Assessment and exam oversight, providing regular formal and informal assessments and feedback to students;
Monitor student attendance and performance; meet with the school administration to develop approaches to any students who require additional supports;
The Trades Teacher will also arrange and coordinate specialty instructors and resources where necessary for safety certifications, including Fall Protection, Traffic Control, WHMIS, Fork Lift Safety, Back Injury Prevention, Chainsaw Safety, and First Aid;
Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor, Director, or the CEO.
Education / Knowledge / Skills / Qualifications
Experience teaching trades/wood/construction in a vocational setting including preparing students for industry examinations;
Minimum 10 years’ experience in the industry;
Interprovincial Journeyperson Carpentry Certification;
Preference will be given to those individuals with a Bachelor of Education and who are BC Teacher Regulation Branch Certificate Holder or who are a past ‘Letter of Permission’ holder;
Professional with high ethical standards. Role model within the community;
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Internet, and Email);
Strong leadership and classroom management skills;
Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedures;
Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset;
Experience working with adult education programs, in First Nations community is considered an asset;
Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5;
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
