About the Position:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary tenure‐track appointment in Urban Systems Engineering specialized in smart, sustainable, resilient cities at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning July 1, 2021.
The Department is seeking a faculty with expertise in the area of smart, sustainable, resilient cities. The Department is particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates with demonstrated research expertise at the intersection of urban systems (e.g., buildings, geotechnique, water, solid waste, transportation, and energy); the surrounding environment (air, land, water, and ecology); and, sensing, modelling, and/or analytical methods – at any or all life‐cycle stages (planning and policy, design, construction, operations, repurposing). Collaborative and leadership experience is a plus, considering the importance of the position for enhancing synergies within the Department and the breadth of research challenges in cities.

About the Academic Unit:
The Department offers dynamic, innovative, and cross‐disciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and undergraduate program in Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering. The Department has diverse expertise in geotechnical, environmental, fire safety, structural, building, and transportation engineering. Graduate programs of the department are offered through the Ottawa‐Carleton Institutes for Civil Engineering and for Environmental Engineering to provide further strength and opportunities. The Department boasts a world‐class strong floor facility, a multi‐hazard test facility for built infrastructure protection and resilience, and a Jarislowsky Chair in Water and Global Health. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in civil or environmental engineering or a related discipline. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of or commitment to research excellence through high quality publications; have the strong ability to develop an externally funded, high quality collaborative research program; will be passionate about effective teaching with demonstrated or strong evidence of potential of teaching excellence; and contribute to the academic life of the Department.
Membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is required at the time of appointment or within three years of appointment.
