What is the opportunity?
This position is responsible for applying sound and strategic underwriting judgement in evaluating mortality risks with a focus on large and complex cases. The incumbent will ensure delivery of best in class underwriting solutions that exceed the needs of our advisors and clients. The incumbent will provide proactive and timely service and case updates to external and internal partners. This role is in an operational environment and will also provide co-signing support for less tenured underwriters.
What will you do?
- Embrace and champion a philosophy of continuous improvement in risk acumen
- Ensure competitive underwriting offers are consistently delivered on a timely basis which are consistent with RBC pricing and profitability objectives
- Exercise creativity and sound judgment to find risk solutions for complex medical and financial cases
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal and external sales partners including wholesalers, advisors and MGAs
- Partner and negotiate with reinsurers to drive optimal outcomes balancing risk and client outcomes
- Assist in the development of underwriters through regular constructive feedback, meaningful referrals and co-signs
- Promote a culture of excellence, one that balances operations and risk and puts the client at the centre of everything we do
What will you need to succeed?
- Minimum 10 years of demonstrated experience as a Life underwriter with experience in the affluent and high net worth markets
- Signing authority of $5M+
- Strong communication skills
- Growth mindset and philosophy of continuous improvement
- Strong collaborator and negotiator
Nice to have
- Bilingual in French and English
- Actively working (or completed) towards the completion of industry designations (FALU, FLMI, CHS)
