Job Summary
The Museum Assistant helps create a welcoming, clean, and engaging experience for visitors at POMO Museum. This weekend position focuses on front desk operations, visitor services, cleaning, retail sales, and supporting and executing museum programs and events.
The successful candidate will also facilitate programs such as birthday parties, school visits, guided activities, and rentals. Depending on their background and experience, there may also be opportunities to assist with research, program development, marketing, public relations, content creation, and other museum projects.
Key Responsibilities
Visitor Services & Museum Operations
- Welcome and assist visitors and share information about the museum, exhibits, collections, grounds, and Port Moody's heritage.
- Operate the front desk and Point of Sale system, including admissions, memberships, donations, and retail sales.
- Complete opening and closing procedures and maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming museum environment.
- Assist with cleaning, signage updates, program set-up and tear-down, and general museum presentation.
Programs & Events
- Facilitate programs, including museum tours, birthday parties, school and group visits, and guided activities.
- Prepare, set up, and clean up program and event spaces.
- Support rentals and special events, including guest arrivals and general event operations.
Community Outreach
- Represent POMO Museum at community events and outreach opportunities, such as Car-Free Day, fall fairs, volunteer fairs, festivals, markets, and other community events.
- Engage with members of the public, promote museum programs and events, and encourage community participation.
- Help set up and operate museum outreach booths, displays, activities, and promotional materials.
- Collect community feedback, answer questions, and help build positive relationships with visitors, community members, and partner organizations.
Additional Projects & Duties
- Depending on skills and experience, assist with research, collections projects, program development, marketing, public relations, and promotional or written content.
- Provide support to volunteers during weekend shifts and events.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of POMO Museum's operations and programs.
Qualifications & Skills
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Comfortable working with children, families, volunteers, and the general public.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Experience in museums, heritage, education, events, recreation, childcare or customer service is an asset.
- Proven experience facilitating programs, leading tours, field trips, camps, daycares, programs, events, workshops or working with children.
- Comfortable using a Point of Sale system and handling cash.
- Ability to perform regular cleaning and physical duties, including setting up tables, chairs, and program materials.
- Interest or experience in research, programming, marketing, public relations, writing, or content creation is an asset.
- Personal vehicle and drivers license is an asset
The successful candidate must be available to work Saturdays and Sundays, from 11:30-4:30pm, and may occasionally be asked to work additional hours for special events, programs, rentals, or other museum needs.
