Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Designer to join our innovative team. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing detailed mechanical designs for packaging machinery and automation systems. You will collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams to create precise drawings, schematics, and system layouts that meet project specifications. Your expertise will help drive the successful delivery of cutting-edge solutions that improve our clients’ operations.
Duties
- Design custom machinery, equipment, assemblies, and components from concept through fabrication and final assembly.
- Develop detailed 3D models and mechanical designs using SolidWorks, including:
- Parts and assemblies
- Sheet metal
- Weldments and structural frames
- Manufacturing and assembly drawings
- Basic motion studies and simulation
- Use SolidWorks PDM to manage engineering files, revisions, approvals, and controlled drawing releases.
- Prepare accurate fabrication and manufacturing drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, and other information required for production.
- Develop and maintain accurate Bills of Material (BOMs) for manufactured and purchased components.
- Perform engineering calculations and component sizing/selection for mechanical systems, including:
- Motors and gearboxes
- Shafts, bearings, couplings, pulleys, belts, and other power-transmission components
- Lead screws and linear-motion components
- Pneumatic cylinders, valves, and related components
- Hydraulic components and systems
- Select appropriate commercially available components based on application requirements, adherence to our corporate component standards, performance, availability, and cost.
- Prepare project and equipment cost estimates using material costs, purchased components, fabrication requirements, and estimated shop and assembly hours.
- Work directly with customers, suppliers, our internal technical / shop team members to define requirements and resolve technical issues.
- Release drawings and documentation to fabrication and provide technical support to the shop during manufacturing and assembly.
- Review and resolve shop-floor questions, fabrication issues, interferences, and design changes as they arise.
- Manage design revisions and engineering changes while identifying and communicating potential impacts to project cost, scope, and schedule.
- Prepare equipment documentation, including operating manuals, maintenance instructions, recommended spare-parts lists, and final project documentation.
- Support continuous improvement through design standardization, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and lessons learned from completed projects.
Experience
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant mechanical design experience, preferably in custom machinery, industrial automation, packaging equipment, or material-handling systems.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, tolerancing, and GD&T.
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods, including machining, welding, sheet-metal fabrication, and equipment assembly.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment layouts, and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of machine guarding and industrial machine safety principles; familiarity with CSA Z432 – Safeguarding of Machinery is an asset.
- Knowledge of the principles of hygienic (sanitary) design is also an asset.
- Experience designing custom machinery, packaging equipment, conveyors, robotic systems, or industrial automation equipment is an asset.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, revisions, and deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate professionally with customers, suppliers, trades, and internal teams.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering and project team.
