Director of Music

Southampton United Church is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and collaborative Director of Music to lead and grow our vibrant music ministry. We are a welcoming and inclusive congregation committed to meaningful worship, community engagement, and spiritual growth. We are looking for someone who is passionate about using music to enrich worship, inspire people of all ages, and help build connections within our church and the wider community.
Working closely with the Minister, Worship Team, volunteers, and musicians, the Director of Music will provide leadership for all aspects of the church's music ministry.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate music for weekly Sunday worship services in consultation with the Minister.
- Lead congregational singing through piano and/or organ accompaniment.
- Provide musical leadership for special services throughout the church year, including Christmas, Holy Week, Good Friday, and other seasonal celebrations.
- Direct and develop the church choir through regular rehearsals.
- Encourage participation from musicians within both the congregation and the community, including rehearsing and accompanying soloists or ensembles.
- Expand and diversify the music program by incorporating a variety of musical styles, including contemporary worship music, while honouring traditional church music.
- Collaborate with the Worship Team, as a member, to support meaningful worship experiences and participate in regular planning meetings as required.
- Embrace technology in worship, including presentation software, livestreaming, and other digital ministry initiatives.
- Oversee the care and maintenance of the church's piano and organ, making recommendations regarding repairs and maintenance.
- Manage music-related purchases and submit invoices and requisitions in accordance with church procedures.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency on piano and/or organ.
- Experience directing choirs and leading congregational singing.
- Knowledge of Christian worship and church music traditions.
- A willingness to explore diverse musical styles that engage all generations.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Experience working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and committees.
- Comfort using technology in worship settings, including presentation software and livestreaming platforms.
- The ability to inspire, encourage, and mentor volunteer musicians.
Position Details
- Part-time: Approximately 10 hours per week
- Time allocation includes approximately:
- 40% worship leadership, rehearsals, and performance
- 60% preparation, planning, administration, music selection, and practice
- The Director of Music is accountable to the congregation through the Ministry and Personnel Committee and the Church Board.
- The Director of Music is also to provide music for weddings and funerals. Compensation for these services is provided separately in accordance with the Southampton United Church Fees for Service Policy.

- The Director of Music may give private instruction in piano, organ, voice, or music theory on the church premises.
- Entitled to one paid Sunday off each year up to a maximum expense of $300, not included as vacation time, to attend an approved church music conference, course, or workshop up to one week’s duration.
