The Youth Peer Educator (YPE) plays a key role in supporting youth violence prevention and healthy relationship education initiatives. YPEs are recruited from priority populations and are trained to deliver engaging, youth-centered workshops that promote healthy relationships, consent, digital safety, bystander intervention, and awareness of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).
Working alongside experienced clinicians and program staff, YPEs use their leadership skills and peer-to-peer connections to foster meaningful conversations, increase awareness, and help connect youth to appropriate supports and services. YPE’s are expected to commit approximately 2-4 hours per week from September 2026 to April 2027. A weekly honorarium will be given based on hours worked.
- Co-design and co-facilitate educational workshops and presentations for youth on topics including:
o Healthy relationships
o Consent and boundaries
o Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) awareness
o Digital safety and online relationships
o Bystander intervention
o Communication and conflict resolution
- Create welcoming, inclusive, and respectful learning environments.
- Engage youth participants through interactive activities, discussions, and peer-led learning approaches.
- Share information in an age-appropriate, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed manner.
- Serve as a positive peer role model and advocate for healthy relationships and violence prevention.
- Provide information about available supports and community resources.
- Recognize when participants may benefit from additional support and connect them to staff through established safe referral pathways.
- Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with program guidelines.
Youth Peer Educators will receive extensive preparation and ongoing support throughout their involvement in the program. Training is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and delivered through interactive learning methods that promote confidence and skill development.
- Successfully complete a comprehensive 12-week Youth Peer Educator Training Program covering:
o Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) prevention and awareness
o Healthy relationships
o Consent and boundary-setting
o Digital safety and online relationships
o Bystander intervention
o Facilitation skills
o Public speaking and presentation skills
o Trauma-informed practice
o Safe referral pathways and community resources
- Participate in interactive workshops, role-playing exercises, and experiential learning activities.
- Attend ongoing mentorship sessions and professional development opportunities.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and growth in youth engagement and violence prevention practices.
- Youth or young adult (ages 15-24) with a passion for promoting healthy relationships and violence prevention.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Interest in peer leadership, advocacy, public speaking and community engagement.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of youth.
- Commitment to creating inclusive, respectful, and culturally responsive spaces.
- Willingness to complete all required training and participate in ongoing mentorship.
- Previous experience in peer leadership, youth engagement, mentoring, facilitation, or community involvement is considered an asset
- Knowledge of youth issues, mental health, healthy relationships, or violence prevention, is considered an asset.
- Ability to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check
