Scope of the Position
The Health and Safety Coordinator will assist the Health & Safety Manager with the enforcement and maintenance of the requisite policies and procedures that are consistent with WorksafeBC Reguations and all other related laws, codes, rules and regulations.
Major Responsibilities
- Develop, implement and maintain company health and safety policies, procedures and programs actively promoting safety culture.
- Provide leadership, guidance and technical support to all company operations regarding specific issues relating to health and safety programs and practices.
- Conduct safety evaluations of project sites using documentation and standardized processes.
- Assist with the preparation and implementation of the site safety plan, and other safety related plans (Fall Protection Plans, Emergency Response, and Hazard Assessments).
- Work with project management to ensure site implementation of the safety program.
- Ensure that subcontractors adhere to required safety standards as per policy and procedures.
- Assess and manage WCB cases through modified work programs and report related injuries.
- Assess risks and trends in the workplace and implement corrective measures to reduce risks.
- Review of statistical data to identify industry trends.
- Maintain Certificate of Recognition (COR) status.
- Participate in on site JHSC meetings with worker and employer representatives, initiate follow up and corrective action to ensure compliance and maintain effective communication with workers and employers.
- Provide in-house health and safety training with employees which includes employee orientation, various employee specific training and Working at Heights.
- Notify site supervision of all safety hazards observed and provide input on corrective actions.
- Maintain records of incidents and accidents and provide statistics for management.
- Identify, investigate, report and provide guidance relative to root causes for incidents, employee safety programs and regulatory compliance pertaining to health and safety.
- Advise on a wide range of specialist areas (regulations, fall protection, occupational health, hazardous substances, client on-line training programs).
- Maintain employee security clearances with various government agencies.
- Maintain 3rd party health and safety accreditation for contractors through various providers.
- All other duties as assigned
Education & Training
NCSO Designation (BCCSA or equivalent) and or Completion of degree/diploma of an accredited Certificate program in Occupational Health and Safety.
Experience
- 3-5 years of experience as a Health & safety Coordinator in the construction industry. Experience in any or all of the following is considered an asset: Roofing, Waterproofing, Cladding and Glazing.
- Fall protection, Swing stage, Aerial work Platform and scaffolding experience required.
- Excellent working knowledge of WorksafeBC, other Acts and related Federal, Provincial and local regulations, standards, legislation that govern Health and Safety compliance.
- Knowledge of COR program and COR Internal Auditor is required.
- A valid driver’s license is required as there is travel to construction sites
