Position function:
Reporting to the Senior Quality Specialist - Warehouse at Caldic Canada Inc., the Lab Technologist will be responsible for conducting quality testing and releasing both manufactured and incoming products. This includes reviewing and validating the quality of incoming materials and finished goods to ensure they meet specified standards before they are released for distribution or use in production.
Scope:
The Quality Technologist will play a key role in processing and testing incoming raw materials, including resale and production materials, to verify that they meet the necessary quality standards prior to their release for manufacturing or shipment. This includes collecting and testing retained samples, reviewing related documentation, and reviewing and creating Certificates of Analysis (COAs). The role also involves investigating non-conformances with both internal and external materials, collaborating closely with teams in Replenishment, Procurement, and suppliers to resolve any issues. Additionally, the Lab Technologist will support warehouse operations by troubleshooting quality issues in collaboration with the Shipping, Receiving, and Inventory teams. On the manufacturing side, the individual will manage quality control tasks to ensure the safe use of ingredients and the release of high-quality finished products.
MAJOR TASKS AND DUTIES:
- Obtain retained samples and conduct quality testing on incoming raw materials, such as oils, vitamins, minerals, and other materials, ensuring proper sampling procedures
- Review all incoming paperwork to ensure products meet specifications
- Use the ERP system to update product release status and accurately record testing results for both incoming and manufactured items.
- Perform testing to positively release manufactured products according to established product parameters and create corresponding COAs.
- Test and release incoming bulk materials (e.g., vegetable oils, lecithin, white mineral oil, sweeteners), and generate related lot numbers and COAs.
- Assist with warehouse and distribution troubleshooting, address quality and specification-related issues, including inspecting trailers, identifying missing supplier labels, inspecting incoming damages, and checking returned totes for insect activity.
- Coordinate Returned Material Authorization (RMA) for received products, determining which materials are suitable for rework and may require internal quality testing.
- Manage supplier-related non-conformance issues at the time of receiving, directly communicating with suppliers regarding product returns, credits, or shelf life extensions when applicable.
- Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as needed to maintain quality and operational efficiency.
- Support Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) for equipment calibration, record keeping, lab supplies, and reagent management.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked lab environment, ensuring all necessary supplies are available for testing and operations.
- Adhere to Food Safety and Quality standards, following prerequisite programs, HACCP plans, CCP monitoring, and SQF code requirements.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, GMPs, and HACCP requirements.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- A degree or diploma in Science is required (Food Science is an asset).
- Working knowledge of HACCP, Food Safety, and GMPs in a food manufacturing environment.
- 1-2 years of experience in food manufacturing, quality control, or a related field.
- Strong background in food science with excellent organizational skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to follow through on tasks.
- Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.
- Proficient in computer skills, including MS Office.
