Position Overview
The Social Media & Communications Intern will support digital outreach, communications, and archival initiatives through content creation, social media management, audience engagement, and database promotion. This role involves assisting with day-to-day communications tasks while helping expand awareness of the organization’s programs, archives, and Shark Database resources.
Responsibilities
- Create, draft, and schedule social media posts across platforms
- Draft and prepare 3–7 social media posts per week
- Ensure all social media posts are reviewed and approved at least one week in advance
- Monitor social media platforms for engagement opportunities, archive articles, and relevant content
- Catalogue social media mentions by finding, printing, and uploading materials to Dropbox
- Develop and distribute mailers and newsletters
- Promote and advertise the Shark Database through social media campaigns, mailers, and related outreach efforts
- Add 4–8 new Shark Database articles/entries on a regular basis
- Assist with maintaining organized digital archives and communications materials
- Support outreach and awareness campaigns through creative and engaging content
- Collaborate with team members on communications strategy and campaign planning
Deliverables / Success Measurements
- Increased visibility and promotion of the Shark Database across digital platforms
- Addition of 4–8 new Shark Database articles/entries during designated reporting periods
- Timely cataloguing and uploading of social media mentions to Dropbox
- Regular development and distribution of mailers/newsletters
- Ongoing monitoring of social channels for archive articles, mentions, and engagement opportunities
- Consistent, professional, and mission-aligned communication across all content
Preferred Skills
- Strong written communication and organizational skills
- Familiarity with major social media platforms
- Experience with Canva, Email platforms, or similar communications tools preferred
- Attention to detail and ability to manage deadlines
- Interest in communications, conservation, archives, or nonprofit outreach preferred
Pay: $20.00 per hour
