HORTICULTURIST REQUIRED FOR BOUTIQUE HOTEL GROUNDS
Location: Rosemead House – Victoria, BC
Wage: $26.50 per hour – Full Time - after 3 Months: $28.00 per hour
Reports to: Maintenance Manager
JOB OVERVIEW
Rosemead House is looking for an experienced and passionate Horticulturist to join our team and care for the gardens and grounds of our boutique hotel.
Our gardens are an important part of the Rosemead House experience. We are looking for someone who takes pride in creating beautiful, welcoming outdoor spaces and understands that attention to detail is an essential part of maintaining a luxury property.
This is a hands-on position ideal for someone with strong horticultural knowledge, a passion for gardening, and the initiative to take ownership of the property's outdoor spaces.
POSITION DETAILS
The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily maintenance, care, and ongoing development of Rosemead House's gardens and grounds.
Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to:
· Maintain garden beds through watering, weeding, raking, pruning, and fertilizing.
· Mow and edge lawns and maintain patios, pathways, driveways, and other outdoor areas.
· Keep the hotel's grounds, ponds, outdoor furniture, and surrounding areas clean and guest-ready.
· Plant and maintain flowers, shrubs, trees, perennials, and annuals.
· Monitor plant health and identify pests, diseases, irrigation issues, and other horticultural concerns.
· Monitor, adjust, and assist with repairs to irrigation systems.
· Plan and install seasonal displays, including Christmas lights.
· Grow vegetables for restaurant use.
· Source plants, materials, and gardening supplies as required.
· Operate and maintain gardening equipment and tools safely and effectively.
· Assist with landscaping projects and property improvement initiatives.
· Coordinate with hotel management and other departments to ensure the grounds complement the overall guest experience.
· Coordinate and oversee outside contractors when specialized landscaping or arboricultural work is required.
· Assist with floral arrangements for hotel use as directed.
· Assist with snow removal and other seasonal duties when required.
· Maintain roads and pathways and assist with grass, soil, and border maintenance.
· Follow all hotel safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment.
· Provide a weekly landscape maintenance report to management.
· Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Several years of professional gardening, landscaping, horticulture, or groundskeeping experience.
· Strong knowledge of plants, pruning techniques, soil management, irrigation, and seasonal horticultural practices.
· Previous experience in a boutique hotel, resort, private estate, or high-end property is an asset.
· Excellent attention to detail and a high standard of workmanship.
· Strong time-management, organization, and prioritization skills.
· Ability to work independently and take ownership of the appearance and condition of the property.
· Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to maintenance.
· Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Ability to push/pull up to 100 lbs. and lift/carry up to 20 lbs. multiple times throughout the day.
· Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence is an asset.
· Food-safe/food-grade plant care experience is an asset.
