Purpose:
The Director Communications provides strategic vision and leadership to the communications activities of the President and for the Office of the President. The Director ensures that all initiatives are consistent with the wider strategic communications objectives of the University. The Director is responsible for shaping and implementing communications initiatives and leadership narratives in support of the President and Vice-Chancellor. Working in close coordination with senior leadership and colleagues across York University, the Director assists in driving awareness and engagement to enhance the President's capacity to communicate York's vision, strengths and achievements within the York community, the region, the province and around the world. The incumbent, while located in the Office of the President, has a close working relationship with the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer and the Office of Communications & Public Affairs.
Education:
University Degree in English or communications required. Master's degree preferred.
Experience:
6-8 years' recent experience in a senior communications role including executive level communications and speech writing experience. Knowledge of issues management, correspondence and speeches and communication planning in a post-secondary, public sector, or broader public sector environment.
Skills:
Knowledge of the organization and workings of the University at a departmental and constituency level, knowledge of university policies and practices and the role of strategic communications is crucial. Knowledge and understanding of academic priorities are an asset. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style and punctuation, thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines. Solid understanding of modern communication principles, practices, and tools. Knowledge of French would be an asset.
This position requires an individual with a unique skill set. Most importantly, the incumbent must have superior writing, grammar and editing skills to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences: skills include active listening to capture pertinent information, ability to write clear, lively, engaging, and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences, while ensuring adherence to the University messages. Must have the ability to write in character to reflect appropriate tone, manner, voice, and attitude of senior institutional leaders. The incumbent must have the ability to research, analyze and understand complex material and from that material write for specific audiences (e.g., speeches, briefing notes, web site articles). They must be able to demonstrate a range of writing styles from the spoken word to long copy assignments, both of which must be capable of conveying information in an accurate, thoughtful, and interesting manner. The incumbent must be a strategic thinker who is able to see the big picture and understand the inter-connections of various initiatives. At the same time, must be results- and action-oriented with the ability to adapt and willingness to roll up their sleeves to work in-depth with details. Strong attention to detail is an absolute necessity. The incumbent must be very thorough and have good project management skills. In addition, they must have proven ability in working effectively in a team and multi-team environment, professional and positive demeanor, showing respect and diplomacy for others at all times, brings to the position outstanding organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines, excellent interpersonal skills, including the capacity to work effectively with senior personnel and external contacts. Demonstrated ability to manage confidentiality at the highest level and proven ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative.

This position works in a normal office environment and performs normal physical activities associated with day to day activities including interactive keyboarding skills 30% - 50% Sensory demands include a higher than normal level of concentration required to carefully review all communication products for accuracy, spelling, grammar, sentence structure.

York implemented a revised CPM Compensation Framework in 2019. The Framework is a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
