Manager, Varsity Athletics – High Performance & Alumni Engagement

Purpose:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Athletics, the Manager, Varsity Athletics ? High Performance & Alumni Engagement, is responsible for the leadership, development, implementation and ongoing management of annual and long-range sport specific, athlete centered, outcome based performance plans for teams that fall within the high performance level of the York Athletics Model including management of 5 full-time (CPM) high performance coaches and between 25 and 30 part-time and volunteer coaches. Working collaboratively with Athletics & Recreation (A&R) leadership, coaches and central Advancement Office partners, the Manager will play a key role to support the engagement of alumni and friends of the Department. In addition, the Manager will oversee support services for the Varsity Athletics Program including: athletic, academic and personal support, strength & conditioning, recruiting and sport information and communication as it relates directly to the Varsity Athletics Program, including the supervision of 4 YUSA positions. The Manager will work with coaches and support staff, in consonance with Department and University goals and objectives, to foster a high-performance environment that contributes to student and team success. This position requires commitment and adherence to the values and principles of A & R as expressed in the mandate of the Department.

Education:
University degree (Master's preferred) or equivalent in physical education, Athletics administration or related field.

Experience:
Minimum of five years' related experience managing an elite or competitive sport program, preferably in an educational environment, including working with high performance coaches, administering budgets, managing schedules and sport event logistics, program planning and review, and committee work. Business, marketing and communications skills and/or experience an asset.

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective interpersonal and public relations skills. Excellent leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to persuade and motivate others. Initiative. Researching, planning, developing and evaluating programs. Excellent budgetary and expenditure control skills. Effective skills in negotiating and resolving conflict. Excellent organizational skills. Proven ability to deal courteously and effectively with people, including the ability to work in a team environment. Familiarity in use of, word processing, spreadsheet, internet and e-mail systems preferred.

Additional Notes:
Normal office working conditions on most occasions but will attend competitions and practices in outdoor and indoor facilities (Gymnasium, Stadium). Performs administrative duties in an office environment as required. Practices and games held on outdoor playing fields during inclement weather. Some travel is required.This position requires the candidate to produce a verification of degree(s), credentials(s), or equivalencies from accredited institutions and/or international equivalents at the time of interview. This position requires the candidate to produce a Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the University prior to commencement of employment.

  • Compensation:
York implemented a revised CPM Compensation Framework in 2019. The Framework is a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award. Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.Visit the CPM Compensation page on the HR Website to find out more about York's CPM Compensation Program.
