Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role as a Construction Estimator at AEGC LTD. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for heavy civil, municipal, underground infrastructure, and ICI construction projects.
The Estimator will review tender documents, drawings, specifications, and project requirements to develop detailed cost estimates and bid submissions. The successful candidate must have strong municipal construction experience and a solid understanding of civil construction methods, underground services, quantities, labour, equipment, materials, subcontractor pricing, and municipal tender requirements.
Construction Estimator – Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for municipal, heavy civil, underground services, and ICI construction projects.
- Review tender documents, drawings, specifications, addenda, contracts, and municipal requirements to determine project scope.
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs for excavation, grading, roadwork, site servicing, underground utilities, concrete, restoration, and related civil construction work.
- Develop accurate estimates for labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, trucking, disposal, and other project costs.
- Prepare and submit competitive bids for municipal tenders and public-sector construction projects.
- Review municipal tender forms and ensure all bid requirements, schedules, pricing forms, bonding requirements, and supporting documentation are completed accurately.
- Solicit, review, and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Compare subcontractor and supplier pricing to determine the most competitive and appropriate options for each project.
- Identify project risks, exclusions, assumptions, potential challenges, and opportunities during the estimating process.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required to assess site conditions and project requirements.
- Work closely with Project Managers, Operations, Site Superintendents, and management during the tendering and pre-construction process.
- Prepare bid summaries, estimate breakdowns, scopes of work, and handover documentation for awarded projects.
- Maintain organized estimating files, historical pricing information, subcontractor databases, and cost records.
- Assist with project budgeting and cost tracking by providing estimating information to the project management team.
- Review completed projects and actual costs to improve the accuracy of future estimates.
- Monitor changes in material pricing, labour rates, equipment costs, and market conditions.
- Ensure estimates comply with applicable municipal standards, specifications, regulations, and industry requirements.
- Manage multiple tenders and estimating deadlines simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Qualifications
- Municipal construction estimating experience is required.
- Demonstrated experience preparing estimates and tender submissions for municipal projects.
- Experience in Heavy Civil Construction is required.
- Experience estimating underground services, including watermain, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, site servicing, and related civil infrastructure.
- Experience with ICI Construction is considered a strong asset.
- Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
- A background in Civil Engineering is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of municipal tendering processes, construction specifications, contracts, drawings, and bid requirements.
- Strong understanding of excavation, earthworks, underground utilities, roadwork, grading, concrete, and site restoration.
- Experience completing quantity take-offs and developing detailed unit-rate and lump-sum estimates.
- Ability to interpret civil drawings, specifications, geotechnical information, tender documents, and contract requirements.
- Familiarity with OPSS/OPS standards and municipal construction specifications is an asset.
- Experience estimating multi-million-dollar municipal construction projects is strongly preferred.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple tenders and competing deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills and experience with estimating, take-off, spreadsheet, and construction management software.
- Must be able to commute to project sites, pre-bid meetings, and the head office as required.
- Knowledge of local regulations, construction standards, and industry practices.
