THE OPPORTUNITY:
This role offers project ownership and client-facing responsibility, without requiring people management.
You will be trusted to manage your own files, interact directly with clients and stakeholders, and drive projects forward from assessment through remediation.
This is not a purely technical or back-office role—this is a hands-on, field-connected consulting position where your judgment, communication, and coordination skills directly influence project outcomes.
This is a Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm, in-office position and does necessitate some site work; as such there is a travel requirement to this position.
If your experience is rooted in hazardous materials within buildings, and you’re ready to step into a role where you can own projects, influence decisions, and work directly with clients—this is the move that takes you there.
WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS (AND WHY IT MATTERS):
When a property is impacted—whether by fire, water damage, or environmental risk—the first question isn’t how to rebuild. It’s…
“Is it safe?”
That’s where you come in.
You are the professional who:
- Identifies hazardous materials within buildings
- Guides insurers, property owners, and contractors on next steps
- Ensures remediation is handled safely, compliantly, and efficiently
This is real-world, high-impact work across industrial, commercial, institutional, and multi-residential properties—where your expertise directly protects people and environments.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to Senior Project Managers and the Operations Manager, you will support and lead hazardous materials projects from initiation through completion. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting and coordinating Designated Substance Surveys (DSS) and hazardous materials assessments
- Working on properties impacted by insurance-related events (fire, flood, environmental damage)
- Acting as the key liaison between insurance clients, property owners, and remediation contractors
- Preparing scopes of work, budgets, proposals, and technical reports
- Attending site inspections, stakeholder meetings, and project reviews
- Monitoring remediation and abatement activities to ensure compliance with regulations and project requirements
- Managing multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timelines and budgets are met
WHO THIS ROLE IS BUILT FOR:
This opportunity is ideal for someone who:
- Comes from an environmental consulting firm focused on buildings and hazardous materials. Must have solid understanding of O.Reg 278/05 and/or O.Reg 490/09
- Has hands-on experience with asbestos, mould, lead, and other designated substances
- Has performed or contributed to Designated Substance Surveys (DSS)
- Understands how to operate within insurance-driven project environments
- Enjoys being both in the field and client-facing
- Is ready to take on greater ownership of projects, without moving into people management
WHO THIS ROLE IS NOT FOR:
This position is not aligned with someone whose experience is primarily in:
- Soil remediation or groundwater/environmental site assessments
- Wildlife, fisheries, or habitat/environmental impact studies
- Laboratory-based or research-focused environmental roles
If your background is not centered on hazardous materials within buildings, this will not be the right fit for you.
EXPERIENCE:
- 5–10 years of experience in hazardous building materials / HAZMAT consulting
- Direct experience with Designated Substance Surveys (DSS)
- Strong knowledge of Ontario regulations related to asbestos, lead, mould, and designated substances
- Experience coordinating with contractors and stakeholders on active project sites
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and deliverables
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong technical report writing and documentation skills
- Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and site conditions
- Highly organized with strong time management and prioritization skills
- Confident communicator in client-facing environments
- Proficiency with MS Office and reporting tools (e.g., Bluebeam, Adobe Acrobat)
Professional designations such as CET, CRSP, or equivalent are considered an asset.
