About the Role
We are seeking a patient, reliable, and skilled Personal Assistant to provide one-on-one support to an individual with disability-related support needs, living independently in Truro, Nova Scotia. This role is funded through the Nova Scotia Disability Support Program's Individualized Funding (IF) program and is self-managed directly by the individual and/or their family.
About the Person You'll Support
The client is a high-functioning individual who is seeking day to day supports to help build a self-sufficient and independent lifestyle focused on their interests. Building a consistent, trusting relationship is important to success in this role, and we are looking for someone who will take the time to get to know the person as an individual, not just as a set of support needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consistent, individualized behaviour support in accordance with the person's Support Plan
- Support daily living activities (e.g., routines, community access, meal preparation) as needed
- Recognize, anticipate, and respond calmly and proactively to behavioural support needs, using strategies outlined in the Support Plan
- Support participation in community, recreational, and/or vocational activities consistent with the person's goals and interests
- Maintain clear, accurate documentation of shifts, incidents, and progress as required for DSP reporting
- Communicate regularly and collaboratively with the family and other members of the support team
- Follow all health, safety, and emergency response procedures
Qualifications & Experience
- Previous experience providing direct support to individuals with disabilities, behavioural support needs, and/or long-term mental illness is strongly preferred
- Training or certification in behavioural support, non-violent crisis intervention, First Aid or a related field is an asset
- Clear Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check (where applicable), prior to start
- Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Excellent communication, patience, and de-escalation skills
- Comfortable working independently with regular check-ins, and following a structured Support Plan
Schedule & Compensation
Schedule: Approximately 15-20 hours per week on average. This may include some evenings, weekends and some travel. Scheduling will be flexible and be based on the needs of the client and availability of the right candidate.
Compensation: $30 per hour. Paid directly by the family under a self-managed Individualized Funding agreement.
