ABOUT THE KAMLOOPS YOUTH SHELTER
The KYS provides living support services to meet the basic needs of youth aged 13 to 18 who require short-term emergency housing. The Youth Shelter provides assessment, intervention, harm reduction, and various other support services to assist youth in creating positive change in their lives.
ABOUT THE JOB
The Youth Support Worker provides assessment and intervention to assist youth in creating positive change and growth in their lives and acts as an advocate for youth and families in the community. Responsibilities include:
- Maintains a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment
- Identifies the right services and supports for youth at intake.
- Ensures the safety and wellbeing of youth, both day to day and in emergency situations
- Use harm reduction strategies.
- Supports youth through healthy daily living routines.
- Collaborates with caregivers and other community professionals to develop and adjust realistic goals.
- Supports youth in their relationships with natural supports.
- Provides referrals for other programs.
- Completes documentation in a timely manner – contact notes, daily journal, critical incident reports, etc.
- Performs housekeeping duties including meal preparation, cleaning, and yard maintenance (mowing, weeding, gardening).

- Interior Community Services is a Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) employer. Part-time employees' entitlement to MPP is determined based on the length of service and accrued wages. If the candidate is already a contributing member, then enrollment is on hire.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
- Degree or Diploma in Human/Social Service or a related field. A degree is an asset.
- Two (2) years of recent related experience supporting individuals experiencing mental health and substance use concerns, and homelessness.
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, and ABILITIES
Demonstrated knowledge and strong abilities to:
- Build healthy, trusting relationships with all involved parties, including youth, staff, community professionals, care teams, and family members
- Manage conflict effectively through mediation and facilitation.
- Respond appropriately to challenging behaviours, crisis situations, and aggression
- Use trauma-informed practices while supporting youth with mental health, substance use, and emotional regulation issues.
- Provide life skills support using a strengths-based approach
- Use various intervention strategies to assist youth in creating positive change
- Implement strong critical and analytical thinking in the work, applying appropriate policies and procedures
- Take initiative on what needs to be done in the program and follow through
- Provide clear and accurate written documentation
REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Class 5 Driving License
- A safe driving record
- Access to a reliable vehicle
- TB Testing showing free from tuberculosis
- Following training is required and provided to the successful candidate free of charge. Existing certification is an asset: Emergency First Aid (Community Care) with CPR-C, Mandt-RCT, SafeTalk, Safe Food Handling, Medication Management, Naloxone, MCFD Privacy, Anti-Bullying and Harassment.
- This position requires Union membership and 1.85% union dues are deducted from each pay.
- Background checks through MCFD HUB is required.
PROGRAM: Kamloops Youth Shelter (KYS)
LOCATION: Kamloops, BC
STATUS: Temporary Part-time
HOURS of WORK: 16 hours per week
SCHEDULE: Friday-Saturday 3:00pm-11:00pm
REPORTS TO: Kamloops Youth Shelter Program Coordinator
COMPENSATION: $30.95-$35.52 per hour (Grid 12 as per collective agreement)
