Field Superintendent / Lead Steel Erector – Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings

HD Construction Ltd. is growing our commercial and industrial steel-building division and we are looking for an experienced Field Superintendent / Lead Steel Erector to take a senior leadership role within our field operations.
This is not an entry-level foreman position.
We are looking for someone who has already independently run complete pre-engineered metal building projects and is capable of taking ownership of a project from mobilization through completion.
The successful candidate should be able to receive a set of erection drawings, a crew and the required equipment and confidently run the project without constant supervision.
For the right person, this position has a clear opportunity to grow into a General Superintendent / Field Operations Manager role as HD Construction continues to expand.
Responsibilities
The Field Superintendent will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of our steel-building projects, including:
- Leading and managing steel erection crews
- Reviewing erection drawings and project specifications before mobilization
- Planning erection sequence and daily work activities
- Building layout and anchor-bolt verification
- Primary structural steel erection
- Secondary steel installation including purlins, girts, bridging and bracing
- Plumbing and aligning structural steel
- Coordinating cranes, telehandlers, boom lifts and other equipment
- Roof and wall cladding installation
- Conventional bag-and-sag insulation systems
- Energy Saver insulation systems
- Interior metal liners
- Insulated metal panel systems
- Trim, flashings, gutters and downspouts
- Crew scheduling and daily manpower assignments
- Establishing and maintaining production targets
- Monitoring project schedule and labour productivity
- Identifying drawing conflicts, missing materials and field issues before they affect the schedule
- Coordinating deliveries and equipment requirements
- Communicating with project management, clients and other trades
- Maintaining HD Construction quality standards
- Managing deficiencies and project closeout
- Completing simple daily field reports and progress photos
- Maintaining a safe, organized and productive jobsite
- Helping train and develop future HD Construction foremen and crew leaders
Required Experience
We are looking for someone with significant hands-on experience in steel-building erection.
Ideal candidates will have:
- 7+ years of structural steel and/or pre-engineered metal building experience
- 3+ years of experience leading erection crews
- Proven experience independently running complete PEMB projects
- Strong ability to read and understand erection drawings
- Strong understanding of erection sequencing
- Experience with building layout and anchor-bolt verification
- Strong understanding of structural steel erection, bracing, plumbing and alignment
- Experience coordinating cranes and lifting equipment
- Experience with roof and wall cladding systems
- Strong leadership and crew-management skills
- Ability to plan work several days ahead
- Strong problem-solving ability
- Good communication skills
- Valid driver's licence
- Ability and willingness to travel for projects when required
Journeyman Ironworker certification is an asset, but proven pre-engineered building experience and leadership ability are more important to us than a ticket alone.
Experience with Norsteel, Butler, Behlen, Robertson, Varco Pruden or other pre-engineered building systems is considered an asset.
Experience with insulated metal panels, Energy Saver insulation and interior liner systems is also considered an asset.

You should be comfortable making day-to-day field decisions, organizing manpower, planning erection sequence, identifying problems early and keeping the crew productive without needing somebody standing beside you telling you what comes next.

$48–$58 per hour depending on experience and proven ability

Schedule & Travel
This is a full-time position based primarily in the Calgary / Southern Alberta area.
HD Construction performs projects throughout Alberta and Western Canada, so some out-of-town work and travel will be required.
Travel expectations will vary depending on current projects.
