About the Opportunity
Support Local Finances
-
Designs work processes to be compliant with the client’s policies and the Locals.
-
Proposes new policies and updates existing policies.
-
Ensures local transactions are compliant with the client’s policies.
-
Liaises with government regarding all financial remittance information, returns for the client and 60 Locals (including CPP, EI, EHT, CRA).
-
Provides Local treasurers with access and authorization to Local accounts (CRA, EHT).
-
Leads forensic audits of Locals.
-
Delegates and oversees SimplyHelp Staff to ensure all audited financial statements, supporting documentation (including year-end adjusting entries) and Sage 50 are received and tracked.
-
Oversee and consolidate the financials of the 60 Locals.
-
Provides Locals, Managers, stakeholders and Board of Directors with interpretation of Local financial statements.
-
Works closely in collaboration with VP Local Finance and Locals to resolve Local issues and provide financial and technical advice.

Provides quarterly reporting to the CFO and Board on statics and emerging issues.
-
Works with VP Local Finance, ME Team, Subject Matter Experts and other stakeholders to create and present education for the Treasures Workshop, New Executive Partnership Workshop and educating new Treasurers.

Maintains and updates Local Budget Template – yearly.
-
Reviews Supplementary Funding (SF) requests for accuracy and compliance with (SF) policies.
-
Prepares and maintains SF Year-End Calculation Workbook and general journal entries.
-
Liaises with Auditors to complete year-end financial reports; ensures consistency of accounting practices throughout the 60 Locals.

Determines and funds bargaining unit allowance, northern and travel allowances and flag in-year adjustments required.
-
Manages and coordinates all billings from the client’s Provincial back to the Locals. Ensures the Locals are notified.
-
Reconciliation of dues revenue received versus UMS reports. Prepare year-end adjusting entries. Work with Controller to reconcile any differences to ensure a reasonable variance between systems. Communicate adjustments to Locals.

Creates and maintains the standardization of chart of accounts and financial statements to be used by Locals and auditors.
-
Manages and oversees the process of strike pay for members on strike.

Maintains and updates provincial salary and expense forms and local salary and expense forms as required.

Identifies and recommends accounting and financial reporting software for Local usage
-
Maintains and troubleshoots the financial reporting software Locals use.
Accounting
-
Provides back-up for Controller for the review of accounts payable, accounts receivable, General Ledger entries, bank reconciliation and staff payroll processing.

Other duties as required.
Managerial Functions
-
Supports the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in establishing and monitoring targets of the team(s); brings new developments and emerging issues to the attention of the Controller; provides information and takes appropriate action where necessary.

Directly supervises SimplyHelp staff
-
Provides mentorship to all staff and coaches in a manner that motivates, guides, and supports employees to the realization of the client’s values, goals, objectives, and performance expectation; ensures a work environment that promotes staff participation, teamwork, and positive employee relations.

Participates in staff orientation, performance review plans and ensures that the team member has the requisite knowledge to undertake their specific duties and responsibilities.

Takes all reasonable precautions for the protection of workers and abides by all other supervisory level duties in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act
About You-
University degree in Finance or a related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
-
Five (5) to seven (7) years relevant experience with minimum of two (2) years in a management role
-
Accounting Designation – CPA-CA, CPA-CGA, CPA-CMA
-
Canadian Payroll Association professional designation/or working towards - PCP or CPM
-
Five (5) to seven (7) years relevant experience leading the payroll process and benefit/pension program(s)
-
Experience administering payroll using an automated payroll system, in a unionized environment; experience in Ultimate Kronos Group (UKG) an asset
-
Working knowledge of payroll legislation, to include CRA, WSIB, EHT, Income Tax Act, Personal Information Protection Act and group insurance policies and Employment Standards
-
Experience in management of financial programs, preferably in the public sector, unionized/not for profit sector.

Group facilitation, presentation, and project management skills.
-
Proven in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and best practices in budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, and reporting.

Excellent written and oral communication skills
