This position is a Canada Summer Jobs Program position. To apply, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 19 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.

Position Summary

Community Volunteer Connections (CVC) is looking for an energetic, people-oriented Mental Health Integration Support Assistant, with excellent communication skills. The successful candidate provides on-site resident support at the Fraser Health facilities Connolly, Cypress, and Cottonwood Lodges, on the Riverview Lands, and interacts with clients during formal and informal recreation time.

Working in a group setting with Fraser Health and CVC staff, the MHIS assistant reports to the CVC Coordinator of Volunteers and supports program activities designed to engage clients in learning, social activities, and recreational opportunities. The primary responsibility of the MHIS assistant is to oversee and interact with clients with severe and persistent mental illness, and to enhance their development and well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with clients that have a persistent mental illness, and/or physical limitations.
  • Observe changes in clients and respond appropriately, using conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills if necessary. Training provided.
  • Guide clients in psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) activities, to assist their integration into the community. Training is provided.
  • Provide assistance and encouragement to clients during social activities, daily living activities, public transportation systems, and public safety.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with clients, volunteers, and staff.
  • Work with supervisor to carry out new and recurring program activities.
  • Communicate with staff, providing feedback on changes in clients.
  • Lead by example by observing safety standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist the Coordinator of Volunteers with some administrative duties related to the Mental Health Integration Support program, as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and in co-operation with others.
  • Physically able to stand for long periods, climb stairs, and other physical duties.
  • Preferred applicants have a clear understanding of the mental illness recovery model.
  • Education goals related to public or social services is preferred.
  • Experience with program planning and volunteer engagement is desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Mental Health Integration Support assistant works in a group setting with CVC staff Cheryl Galandie and Fraser Health staff at the lodges on Riverview Lands. You will report directly to Cheryl Galandie. This assignment is a temporary full-time position at 30 hours per week, with flexible hours.

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 14 weeks

Salary: $16.00 per hour
