Job Description

Reporting to the Manager, Laboratory Services, the Pathologists’ Assistant/Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT & PA), Histology works within his/her scope of professional practice in a team environment to process surgical material to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

The PA/MLT provides anatomical pathology services under the control and supervision of a Pathologist by assisting in the preparation of surgical specimen dissection. The PA/MLT must be knowledgeable and practice in accordance with the Medical Laboratory Technology Act, CMLTO, Ontario Laboratory Accreditation, and Hospital regulations and standards.


  • Gross Dissection of Complex cases and simple uncomplicated biopsies/excisions
  • Describes gross anatomical features, dissects surgical specimens and prepares tissue for histological examination.
  • Performs and assures appropriate specimen accessioning, obtains the clinical history and photographs all pertinent specimens and microscopic slides as directed by a pathologist(s).
  • Tissue processing of specimens using correct procedures.
  • Performs basic embedding techniques and microtomy to produce acceptable quality slides.
  • Performs manual and automated routine and special stains including immunohistochemistry as required.
  • Other duties as required.

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Biological Sciences, Allied Health Sciences or related degree, OR
  • MLT General Diploma from a recognized School of Medical Laboratory Science, OR
  • Pathologists’ Assistant Program OR related experience.
  • Completion of certification exams for general registration from CSMLS.
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • One to two years’ experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant required.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy, macrosurgical techniques and general laboratory skills.
  • Understand and use lab and hospital software systems (i.e. Cerner CoPath LIS, Dragon Voice Recognition dictation, Paradigm document management system).
  • Autopsy experience an asset.
  • Knowledge of Infection Control and biohazards requirements and the required safety precautions and awareness of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to maintain safety of self and others.
  • Skills in leadership, problem solving, decision making and critical thinking.
  • Working knowledge of quality and risk management practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation.
  • Provide assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner.
  • Proficiency in maintaining records, use of electronic communication tools and software.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and prioritize work.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others within and outside of the organization (i.e. pathologists, staff physicians, patients, suppliers, Ministry of Health).
  • Proven attendance record.
