About the Position
John Noble Home is seeking an experienced and dedicated Director of Care (DOC) to join our leadership team on a temporary full-time basis to provide maternity leave coverage.
Reporting to the Administrator, the Director of Care is responsible for the overall planning, organization, direction, coordination, and evaluation of nursing services within the Home. The DOC provides strategic and clinical leadership to the Nursing Department and ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, resident-centred care in accordance with applicable legislation, professional standards, and organizational policies.
As a member of the Senior Administrative Team, the Director of Care contributes to the overall leadership and strategic direction of the Home and, when required, assumes administrative responsibility for the facility in the absence of the Administrator.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction to the Nursing Department, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Personal Support Workers (PSWs), Nurse Practitioners, Resident Care Coordinators, Nursing Program Coordinator, Quality Improvement Coordinator, RAI Coordinator, and Ward Clerk.
- Establish nursing philosophy, goals, objectives, and standards that support high-quality resident care.
- Ensure nursing services and practices comply with applicable legislation, including requirements of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), Ministry of Long-Term Care, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other relevant legislation and regulatory standards.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and maintain nursing programs, policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
- Promote evidence-informed practice, professional development, and the advancement of nursing knowledge.
- Provide leadership in staffing, resource allocation, workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, discipline, and employee relations.
- Collaborate with Human Resources on recruitment, labour relations, grievance handling, employee performance, and other employment matters.
- Participate in labour negotiations and support positive labour-management relations.
- Oversee the effective utilization and distribution of nursing resources, equipment, and medical supplies.
- Prepare and administer the annual Nursing Department budget and monitor expenditures.
- Oversee clinical documentation and assessment systems, including the Integrated Assessment Record and RAI/MDS processes.
- Ensure appropriate clinical systems and processes are maintained to support quality resident care and regulatory compliance.
- Provide leadership related to infection prevention and control and privacy responsibilities within the Home.
- Liaise and collaborate with external partners, including hospitals, Public Health, physicians, pharmacies, community care partners, vendors, educational institutions, and other health care providers.
- Work collaboratively with admission and interdisciplinary teams to support appropriate placement and transition of new residents.
- Oversee and manage relationships and contracts with external vendors and educational institutions.
- Participate in the development and implementation of the Home’s strategic plan and quality improvement initiatives.
- Serve as Chair or member of internal and external committees related to resident care and organizational operations.
- Ensure the provision of appropriate education and professional development opportunities for nursing staff.
- Provide leadership in emergency preparedness, including the development and maintenance of fire and evacuation plans and related staff education.
- Participate in the Senior Administrative Team’s on-call rotation.
- Assume responsibility for the administration of the Home in the absence of the Administrator, as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Leadership & Supervision
The Director of Care provides overall leadership and direction to the Nursing Department, supporting the entire department through direct and indirect supervision.
The position directly supervises designated nursing leadership and support roles and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of resident care operations.
Supervisory responsibilities include recruitment and selection, orientation and training, scheduling and work assignment, performance management, recognition and discipline, addressing employee concerns, and resolving workplace issues in accordance with organizational policies, collective agreements, and applicable legislation.
Qualifications
Education & Professional Registration
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse (RN) required.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a Registered Nurse in the long-term care sector required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a nursing management role within a health care setting required.
- Certificate or diploma in Gerontology is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development through workshops, seminars, continuing education, and/or formal education.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities with the ability to lead a diverse, multidisciplinary team.
- Strong knowledge of long-term care legislation, regulatory requirements, and professional nursing standards.
- Knowledge and understanding of current CNO standards and guidelines.
- Strong understanding of quality improvement and resident-centred care principles.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with residents, families, staff, physicians, community partners, and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and make sound decisions in a fast-paced health care environment.
- Strong conflict resolution, labour relations, and employee relations skills.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and RAI/MDS.
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a Senior Administrative Team and contribute to organizational planning and decision-making.
