Senior Underwriter, Commercial Lines
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Underwriter, Commercial Lines to join our team in either Burnaby or Edmonton.
In this role, you will manage a significant portfolio of commercial accounts, ensuring long-term profitability while maintaining strong broker partnerships and supporting the development of underwriting team members. You will play a key role in driving profitable growth, delivering exceptional service, and contributing to a collaborative, high-performing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain the long-term profitability of a significant commercial portfolio, in accordance with underwriting guidelines and delegated authority levels.
- Partner with an assigned broker network to achieve regional business objectives related to profitability, growth, retention, and service excellence.
- Delegate renewals and underwriting tasks to underwriters and technical assistants while participating in quarterly audits to ensure compliance with underwriting and service standards.
- Prepare reports, statistics, and portfolio analyses for management as required.
- Build and maintain strong relationships within the brokerage community through regular broker visits, meetings, and industry events.
- Monitor market trends, competitive activity, and changing industry conditions, providing insights and recommendations to management.
- Participate in new business discussions and contribute to strategic underwriting decisions.
- Mentor and coach underwriting team members, providing guidance on complex underwriting matters and supporting solution-oriented decision-making.
- Contribute to special projects and perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Post-secondary education in a related field.
- 5–10 years of progressive commercial underwriting experience within SME and mid-market segments.
- CIP or FCIP designation completed or in progress.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong ability to assess, select, underwrite, and manage commercial accounts.
- Excellent knowledge of Commercial Lines underwriting principles, coverages, forms, pricing, and guidelines.
- Solid understanding of broker–insurer relationships and their impact on underwriting strategy.
- Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
- Collaborative mindset with a strong team-oriented approach.
