Overview
The Lab Technician contributes to the overall efficiency of Lab Medicine by ensuring effective patient focused care. This position is responsible for providing clerical and technical support in the various areas of Lab Medicine such as Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology/ Immunohaematology, Microbiology, Cytology and Specimen Procurement.
The Lab Technician works in collaboration with hospital systems to provide optimal patient-centered care whilst procuring blood. They demonstrate compassion and prioritize care for multiple patients while ensuring each patient’s needs are met in a timely manner.
The clerical, technical and quality assurance responsibilities of this position include: positive patient identification, procuring specimens, accessioning samples, preparing specimens for analysis, storing and disposing of specimens, maintaining records and observing principles of data security and patient confidentiality.
The Lab Technician rotates through assigned work areas, which include Pathology, Cytology, Microbiology/Send-outs, Order Entry/Specimen Accessioning, and Phlebotomy.
Education
- Lab Assistant Diploma required;or completion of first year Canadian Medical Laboratory Science (MLT) program required
- OSMT and/or CSMLS certificate preferred.
Qualifications
- Competency and experience with Blood Procurement is mandatory.
- Previous experience as a Laboratory Technician in a hospital setting preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in blood collection (including challenging procurement) and ECG Practices preferred.
- Experience with processing specimens, operating laboratory instruments preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize tasks/responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated ability to function in a diverse work environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education.
- Good attendance and work record required.
