The Chemistry Department seeks applications for laboratory instructors in First Year Chemistry (CHEM 1110/1120), Introductory Organic Chemistry (CHEM 2410/2420), Organic Chemistry for Life Sciences (CHEM 2430) Advanced Organic Chemistry (CHEM 3420) , Analytical Chemistry (CHEM 2210 & 3220), Physical Chemistry (CHEM 2310 & 3310), Inorganic Chemistry (CHEM2720 and 3740), Spectroscopy (CHEM 3610), and Environmental Chemistry (Chem 2020) laboratories for the 2026-2027 academic year.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Graduate Lab instructors’ responsibilities will be:

Acting as supervisor of students for in person undergraduate laboratories

Providing pre-lab instruction / talks and guidance on topics and procedures required for the completion of a lab at the beginning of the lab period
- Actively engaging with students while they work in the lab and correcting any deviation from lab procedures or protocols

Ensuring chemicals, solutions and equipment are used safely and correctly
-
Following UPEI, and Chemistry Department Policies and Standard Operating Procedures

Marking recording and submitting lab report marks to course instructor

Answering or assisting with student questions related to the laboratory material and reports by email outside of scheduled lab time to assist in students completing lab reports

Promptly and accurately submitting hours worked into UPEI time sheet system
QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a current Graduate student at UPEI

Applicants will have successfully completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or a related field which requires the equivalent knowledge and laboratory experience for the area of chemistry they will instruct

Successful candidates will be required to complete an online WHIMIS course with exam and attend a mandatory Site Safety Training session with a duration of 2 hours held during normal business hours (8:30AM – 5PM) prior to the first lab session

Some positions will be required to attend mandatory weekly or bi-weekly information/training sessions with chemistry department technical staff regarding upcoming labs

Up to date and well versed in standard chemistry lab procedures including manipulating volumetric glassware, volumetric instrumentation, analytical balances, common laboratory equipment (pH meters, melting point apparatus, spectrometers, etc.), common separation and filtration techniques (liquid-liquid extraction, vacuum filtration, TLC), and general hazardous waste management procedures within the laboratory setting

Strong time management and ability to meet set deadlines

Proficiency with Windows based computers and software including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Doc software
- Be available to commit to all scheduled laboratory periods agreed upon at time of hiring (excluding breaks)
